The creators (artist group)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The creators was an expressionistic oriented Dresden artist group around Erich Fraaß , Curt Großpietsch , Wilhelm Lachnit , Willy Illmer and Fritz Skade with socially critical respect. It was founded in 1920 by the German-Russian painter and art writer Alexander Bertelsson .

history

The artist group Die Schaffenden was formed in Dresden in 1920 as a commitment by the artists in solidarity to the social movements and as an exhibition community. Fraaß, Großpietsch and Illmer already knew each other from the Spartakusbund . However, there remained a loose association of like-minded artists without their own pioneering program.

There was no direct connection between the artist group and the well-known graphic portfolio of the same name “Die Schaffenden”, which Paul Westheim had published in the Euphorion Verlag in Berlin since 1918 .

The group's first exhibitions took place in 1920 in the exhibition building of the Saxon Art Association and in the Emil Richter Art Salon . In 1922 there was another exhibition in the Emil Richter Art Salon and an extensive exhibition in the Saxon Art Association. In the run-up to the exhibition at the Sächsischer Kunstverein, the group created over 100 different self-painted exhibition posters as an “exhibition of art on the street”. Also in 1922, the group took part in the cartel of progressive artists' associations in Germany , took part in the 1st Congress of International Progressive Artists in Düsseldorf and featured in the accompanying “I. International Art Exhibition Düsseldorf 1922 ”. The exhibition took place from May 28 to July 3, 1922 on the fourth floor of the Tietz department store .

Members of the artist group were: Alexander Bertelsson , Karl Eugen Biebrach (1882), Anton Bruder (1898–1983, painter), Max Busyn , Erich Fraaß , Konstantin Franz (1896), Alfred Glatter (1889–1923, sculptor), Curt Großpietsch , Willy Illmer , Walter Jacob , Georg Kind , Wilhelm Lachnit , Heinz Lewerenz (1890–1939), Karl Lüdecke , Otto Meister , Rolf Nesch , Fritz Skade , Oskar Trepte and Fritz Winkler .
