The art gallery in the Lipsius building is one of the exhibition venues of the Dresden State Art Collections . It is located in the Lipsius Building, known as the Art Academy and crowned with a dome, on Brühl's Terrace , where the Dresden University of Fine Arts is also based. There it is located in the immediate vicinity of the Albertinum in a wing that is also known as the Brühlsche Terrasse exhibition building . Changing art exhibitions by contemporary visual artists are shown.

history

As an integral part of Lipsius building was also the art gallery between 1887 and 1894. It is a neo -construction with elaborately framed tympanum and high gables .

Until it was destroyed as a result of the air raids on Dresden, the Kunsthalle served as an exhibition building for the Saxon Art Association, which was dissolved in 1945 . As early as 1905, works by the Dresden artist group Brücke were shown here. During the GDR era , the art gallery was unused. The final reconstruction only took place after 1990.

In October 2005, the Kunsthalle, which has since been looked after by the Dresden State Art Collections, reopened with the exhibition “The View of Dresden”.

Location

The art gallery is located in the main building of the Dresden University of Fine Arts in the Inner Old Town district, named after its architect Constantin Lipsius and crowned by a dome popularly known as the “lemon press” . It is part of an eastern side wing which, for urban planning reasons, is inclined at around 45 degrees to the other parts of the building. On its northeast side is the Brühlsche Terrasse , which here expands to form the Jungfernbastei . The southeast side is taken up by Georg-Treu-Platz , where the entrance to the Dresden Fortress Museum is also located. Another Dresden art museum building in the immediate vicinity is the Albertinum with the New Masters Gallery .

Exhibitions

Regularly changing exhibitions of works of contemporary art are presented in the art gallery . In its interior, consisting of a large hall and several side cabinets, exhibitions on Sigmar Polke , Martin Honert and Robert Stadler have already been on view.
