The museum's permanent exhibition extends over two floors of the building. The life and work of the composer Carl Maria von Weber are documented . The collection includes personal items, some of which come from the estate of his great-granddaughter Mathilde von Weber (1881–1956), for example Weber's tuning fork , signet ring and seal . Numerous contemporary documents attest to the musician's work, including excerpts from manuscripts of music, diaries and letters. Most of these are facsimiles . Most of the originals are in the Berlin State Library . The original paintings of several family members are also on display. Due to the loss of original furniture during the war, Weber's study on the first floor was modeled with contemporary furniture.

Concerts take place regularly in the small event room, traditionally also in the garden in summer. For decades there has been cooperation with the Dresden Academy of Music Carl Maria von Weber . In addition, changing special exhibitions with themes appropriate to the house enrich the offer for visitors.

history

In the 19th century, Hosterwitz was a popular summer retreat for the residents of the nearby residence city of Dresden, including many artists, due to its charming location . During a walk, Carl Maria von Weber, who held the position of court conductor at the Dresden court theater from 1817 until his death , discovered the house of the winemaker Gottfried Felsner in the spring of 1818 and then spent the summer months of 1818 and 1819 here with his family as well as from 1822 to 1824. During this time he got to know the landscape around Pillnitz and Hosterwitz as well as the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and was musically inspired by the impressions of nature he had experienced. In today's museum building, large parts of the opera Euryanthe , the jubilee cantata on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of the Saxon king, the cantata Nature and Love as well as songs and piano music such as the Rondo, Invitation to Dance, were created . Weber also received various musicians and poets here, such as Heinrich Marschner , Johann Nepomuk Hummel , Ludwig Tieck and Wilhelm Müller . During Caroline von Weber's stay with her two young sons Max Maria and Alexander Maria in the summer of 1826, the news of her husband's death in London reached her there.

In 1836 the Prussian music director Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns , a great admirer of Weber and the first editor of a catalog raisonné , donated a guest book. A letter, a sheet of music and a portrait of the artist followed in 1847. For example, Weber's admirers could not yet have an exhibition in this house, but the first documents could be presented. In 1865, on Jähn's advice, a memorial plaque was placed on the facade of the house. In 1923 the Saxon Homeland Security Association took over the building. In 1948, a memorial room was opened for the first time on the ground floor. In 1957, one year after the death of Mathilde von Weber, the last descendant to live in Dresden, the City Council of Dresden had the only museum in the world dedicated to the composer set up in Weber's former living quarters. After a thorough renovation that began in 1973, the house was reopened in 1976 on the 150th anniversary of Carl Maria von Weber's death .
