The Josef Hegenbarth Archive is an art museum in Dresden that is part of the Kupferstichkabinett and thus one of the state art collections . It is dedicated to the graphic artist and painter Josef Hegenbarth , who lived in the Saxon state capital for more than half a century until his death in 1962 .

Location

The archive is located in the Loschwitz district in the east of Dresden. It stands at an acute angle near the intersection of Pillnitzer Landstrasse and Calberlastrasse. The building is located at the lower end of the Dresden Elbe slopes , only a few 100 meters from the Elbe . It is about Hegenbarth's former house, in which he lived from 1921 to 1962 and where he had set up a studio .

Nearby is the Leonhardi Museum , where artist studios were also previously set up and which therefore has a thematic reference to the Josef Hegenbarth Archive. Other Dresden museums in the area are the Schillerhäuschen in Loschwitz and the Carl-Maria-von-Weber-Museum in Hosterwitz , which is also housed in an old winegrower's house on the slopes of the Elbe.

Duration

The museum's holdings include, on the one hand, the works of Josef Hegenbarth and, on the other, original furnishings, his drawing equipment and private memorabilia.

The focus is on Hegenbarth's work. They mainly consist of drawings and sketches . The extensive collection of Hegenbarth works includes 5,300 book illustrations , 3,000 graphite sketches , 2,300 graphic sheets, 1,700 ink drawings , 150 paintings , 80 etching plates and 300 sheets by other artists.

The former living and working rooms are located on the second floor of the museum. They are furnished with the original furniture and furnishings from the artist's estate. Many of his works are presented in them. His extensive library and drawing utensils are shown in the studio . In the adjoining rooms are the depots in which Hegenbarth's artistic and written estate, including numerous letters, is stored.

The first floor is the location for three to four changing exhibitions of works by Hegenbarth and other artists every year.

history

The building that houses the archive was built in 1848 as a winegrower's house. In 1921 Josef Hegenbarth bought the property together with a relative and moved to the second floor. Hegenbarth's numerous guests who subsequently visited his house include Otto Dix , Theodor Rosenhauer , Carl Lohse , Wilhelm Lachnit , Karl Kröner , Herbert Volwahsen , Hans Theo Richter , Max Schwimmer and Hegenbarth's biographer Fritz Löffler .

After Josef Hegenbarth's death in 1962, only his widow Johanna lived in the house. During this time, she established the first systematic collection of her husband's works and thus the Josef Hegenbarth Archive. Until her own death in 1988, she initiated many publications and exhibitions about Josef Hegenbarth. In accordance with her will, the property, house and artistic estate were bequeathed to the Kupferstichkabinett Dresden on condition that the holdings are inventoried, published and made available for use in a museum for the public.

In 1991 the building was reconstructed as it was in the 1920s, and in 1998 it was extensively renovated. At the same time, the complete cataloging and inventory of Hegenbarth's work was carried out. In December 1998 the Josef Hegenbarth Archive opened for visitors.
