The Hegenbarth Collection Berlin is a private art collection with works from the 20th and 21st centuries, which are made accessible to the public in changing exhibitions. The collection is managed by Jutta and Christopher Breu, who also founded an exhibition cabinet in 2014 under the name of Mr. Hegenbarth . This created a place in Berlin that is specifically dedicated to drawing and graphics . The Hegenbarth Collection has been at its new location at Laubacher Straße 38, in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district , since July 2019 . From November 2014 to June 2019 the Hegenbarth Collection was located at Nürnberger Straße 49 in Berlin-Schöneberg .

Artist

The collection honors the draftsman, painter, illustrator and graphic artist Josef Hegenbarth (1884–1962) with its name . His colored and black and white pen and brush drawings form the focus of the holdings.

Alignment and inventory

The collection includes works from around 1900: paintings and drawings, mainly on paper (hand drawings), prints, portfolios, series, book and paper objects as well as a library with illustrated books, catalogs and secondary literature.

The main focus of the collection is on illustration and book art . Picture stories in children's books, illustrations for literary works and artist books are just as important as comics , graphic novels and animations. The starting point for this is an extensive group of literary drawings by Hegenbarth in the collection, including the detailed portfolios for the Nibelungenlied , Lied von der Glocke and Aus dem Leben eines Nibelungen from the 1920s.

Further thematic focuses of the collection are on the representation of animals and humans, on the one hand in everyday surroundings such as zoo and circus, coffee house and cabaret, at work and in street scenes, on the other hand in portraits or as figures in the Bible and legends .

The Hegenbarth Collection Berlin prepares two to three individual or themed exhibitions in its own cabinet every year. In addition, she is regularly represented with loans at exhibitions in other museums and institutions.

The exhibitions offer the public and trade visitors the opportunity to get to know the many facets of Hegenbarth's work. His life and work during the various political systems of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the Weimar Republic , National Socialism and the post-war period in the GDR and FRG will also be examined.

Events and art education

As part of the supporting program for exhibitions and special occasions, a. Lectures, guided talks, musical and scenic performances take place. A specific characteristic of these offers is the possibility of open, direct exchange between artists, the public and art historians in front of originals. The event series Bilderkarussell is dedicated to the meeting of text and image in printed and other media. Specially developed communication formats such as thematic discussion groups, film evenings or workshops are aimed at school classes, senior citizens and participants with disabilities. Access is barrier-free.

The Hegenbarth Collection Berlin participates u. a. on the International Museum Day , on the Long Night of Museums , the Weekend of Graphics, organized by the Network Graphic Collections , at Aktion Deutschland reads by the Reading Foundation and on the program of the International Literature Festival Berlin (ilb).

Study room

The study room is used to present and view selected originals by prior arrangement. A comprehensive reference library is also available there. It brings together almost all of the books illustrated by Josef Hegenbarth, mostly in original editions and often in different editions . There are also monographs and exhibition catalogs on Hegenbarth and other artists in the collection, art volumes, reference works, literature on Hegenbarth's topics, on illustration, book art and drawing, on artistic techniques, on the history of the 20th century, on the so-called lost generation and art movements of the 20th century Century, to the GDR and to Hegenbarth's places of activity Dresden , Prague and Kamnitz .

Publications

The publishing house of the Hegenbarth Collection Berlin publishes book editions and literary works for most of the exhibitions (in the series Mr. Hegenbarths Entdeckungen) as well as illustrated volumes on the Nibelungenlied and on works by Hauff, the Brothers Grimm, Schiller and Eichendorff.
