Museums in Dresden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The city of Dresden owes its world fame, the nickname Florence on the Elbe and its current importance as an art and cultural metropolis to a large extent to its museums and galleries . The art collections of the Electorate , the Kingdom and the Free State of Saxony are located in the former royal seat and today's state capital .

The Pillnitz Castle , the “Army Museum” , the Hygiene Museum and the museums of the city of Dresden also live from the eventful history of Dresden and are also visited by foreign guests. There are also many lesser-known institutions that expand the museum landscape thematically, spatially and in terms of sponsorship.

The central facility of the State Art Collections (SKD) is the Dresden Royal Palace with the Green Vault . This treasure in the form of jewelry and representative exhibits is a collection of European goldsmithing and fine crafts. The collection is closely linked to the Münzkabinett , the armory and the Kupferstichkabinett .

In the Zwinger , which is only separated from the palace complex by Sophienstrasse , there are further exhibitions: the porcelain collection with its objects that should not be overestimated for cultural history, and the mathematical-physical salon . It contains mathematical, physical and astronomical instruments, globes and maps from the early modern period. It is a testimony to the connection between culture and science in Dresden.

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister has been located in the Sempergalerie of the Zwinger since 1855 . The most famous exhibit in this gallery is the Sistine Madonna by Raphael . With other works by Rembrandt , Rubens and Canaletto , the gallery carries pictures of the Renaissance and Baroque . The term "old masters" shows the epochal demarcation from the painters of later epochs.

The “ New Masters ” in the Albertinum on Brühlschen Terrasse include painters such as Caspar David Friedrich , Max Liebermann , Max Slevogt , Otto Dix and artists from the Brücke group . The gallery thus carries works of Romanticism , Impressionism and Expressionism . In contrast to the “old masters”, many of the artists in this gallery had a personal connection to Dresden by studying, teaching or living here at the art academy . Three-dimensional works of art from 5000 years ago belong to the sculpture collection , also in the Albertinum. The art gallery in the Lipsius building mainly pays homage to contemporary art, some of which is created in the adjacent art academy.

Further facilities of the state art collections are the arts and crafts museum in Pillnitz Castle, the Josef Hegenbarth archive in Loschwitz , the museum for Saxon folk art and the puppet theater collection in the Jägerhof in the Neustadt and the Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden .

The Pillnitz Castle Museum owned by the State Palaces, Castles and Gardens of Saxony is housed in the New Palais of Pillnitz Castle. The casemates of the Dresden Fortress also belong to this group . They are supported by the “Dresdner Verein Brühlsche Terrasse e. V. "made available to the public.

The Saxon Memorials Foundation in memory of the victims of political tyranny oversees the former execution site Münchner Platz and the Stasi victims' memorial on Bautzner Strasse .

The book museum of the SLUB Dresden , the collections and art holdings of the TU Dresden and the octagon of the University of Fine Arts Dresden are assigned to the state universities. (The Botanical Garden of the TU Dresden certainly also has the characteristics of a museum.)

The Saxony Police History Collection must also be counted among the state museums.

The State Museum for Prehistory Dresden has moved to Chemnitz and has been called the State Museum for Archeology Chemnitz since 2014 .

The Dresden Technical Collections are located in the Striesen district and are evidence of the Ernemannbau , a former manufacturing facility for photographic technology (e.g. Praktica ).
