Structure of the plants

Outdoors

Large areas of the open-air site and the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden have been structured according to plant geographical criteria since Oscar Drude . In front of the Great Tropical House there are living fossils (the same or related species existed in the Central European tertiary flora ), this is vividly supplemented by huge fossil remains of trees. The morphological department shows plant adaptations to various environmental factors. The systematic section shows the botanical relationships. In the summer months an extensive collection of annual plants is impressive . There is a collection of medicinal and aromatic plants .

Greenhouses

Three greenhouses give an insight into the flora of tropical and subtropical areas. Around 3000 species of plants are housed in the greenhouses. With the five nurseries, the greenhouse area is around 1000 m². There are three separate display greenhouses accessible to visitors: the America Tropical House houses plant species from the rainforests of the Neotropic in the rear , and in the Victoria cruziana area potted plants are housed in the winter months. The Great Tropical House ( Paläotropis ) is divided into an area with the tropical flora of Asia and Africa and an aquarium section with aquatic plant species . The succulent house exhibits orchids and carnivorous plants in the entrance area , after which the visitor arrives at the plant species of the arid regions of Africa and America.
