Almost all of the museum's exhibits are connected and ready for use and some of the visitors can also operate them themselves.
On the second floor of the building there is a true to the original electoral hall , as it was to be found in many switching offices up to the 1990s. Visiting this area is only possible as part of a guided tour. Here, too, most of the technology, e.g. B. election switching systems , teleprinters , clock systems , etc. ready for operation and demonstrated to the visitors.
In addition to the technical exhibits, the museum also has an extensive technical library and documentation. The results of the research into the history of telecommunications are presented in publications and lectures, e.g. B. published on the Dresden market for history and stories.
history
The first hand-switched city telephone exchange in Dresden was opened in 1882. The history of electromechanical switching systems began in Dresden with the activation of the self-connecting office at Dresden's Postplatz . This building in the immediate vicinity of the current museum (in front of the entrance to the Altmarkt-Galerie ) was badly damaged in World War II and had to be demolished in the 1950s. Many of the other exchanges in the Dresden city area, such as B. Dresden-Neustadt, Dresden-Loschwitz and others, however, were operated with the technology from the 1920s until 1995. More modern technology was added over the years.
In the course of digitization, the entire technology from seven decades was taken out of service from 1991 and partially stored.
The Association of Interest Group Historical Telecommunications Technology was founded on October 20, 1999 with the aim of rebuilding important elements of this technology and keeping them operational.
The association members run the telecommunications museum on a voluntary basis, there are no employees. For this reason, the museum is only accessible to smaller groups by prior arrangement and without prior reservation for the Dresden Museum Night and the Open Monument Day in September, as well as regularly on the first Saturday of the month.
