Gerhard Richter Archive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gerhard Richter Archive (GRA for short) was founded in February 2006 as an institution of the Dresden State Art Collections . Gerhard Richter is a major artist of the 20th and 21st centuries in Europe of both classical modernism and abstraction. His work spans a period of almost six decades. The Gerhard Richter Archive in his home town of Dresden serves as a storage location, research facility and curates the two rooms with works by Gerhard Richter in the permanent exhibition ( location: Albertinum ). The work of the archive takes place in close consultation with the artist's Cologne studio. The most important research project of the archive is the elaboration and publication of the scientific catalog raisonné of pictures and sculptures by Gerhard Richter, which is planned for six volumes .

Gerhard Richter's pictures in Dresden

On the second floor of the Albertinum, two rooms are permanently dedicated to Gerhard Richter's work. The works exhibited there, including permanent loans from the Federal Republic of Germany and the artist himself, give an insight into all of the artist's previous work, from the early photo-realistic paintings such as the Secretary (14) to his computer-generated striped works or his most recent photographic works such as Birkenau (937a / 1-4) . The two rooms are rebuilt several times a year and thus give the opportunity to get to know different facets of the plant. Many of the artist's special exhibitions in Dresden were also held in these rooms as part of the normal exhibition tour.

Holdings of the Gerhard Richter Archive

The artist archive collects all publications, photographs, image and sound carriers that contain relevant information and contributions about art and the artist Gerhard Richter. Dietmar Elger has been its director since it was founded. Unpublished papers and documents, correspondence and photographs are an essential part of the archive. In addition to scientific treatises, the Gerhard Richter Archive also contains everyday items such as magnets, bags, cloths, novels, school and children's books, card games, CDs, LPs, DVDs, pencil boxes and much more. These materials can be viewed by scientists after registration.

In addition to the "classic archive material", the Gerhard Richter Archive also collects art by and with Gerhard Richter.
