Thelma Thall

Thelma "Tybie" Thall , married Sommer (* 1924 in Columbus (Ohio) ) is a former American table tennis player . In the 1940s, she won two gold medals at world championships .

Names

At first she played under her maiden name Thelma Thall . Often she was also called Tybie . In 1949 she married Norman Sommer. She is Leah Neuberger's sister .

World championships

In 1948 and 1949 Thelma Thall took part in the world championships. In 1948 she became world champion in mixed with Dick Miles . With her sister Leah she achieved in doubles after Siegen u. a. against the world-class doubles Pritzi / Rozeanu the semi-finals, in which they were defeated by their compatriots Margaret Franks / Vera Thomas .

In 1949 she won her second gold medal in Stockholm in the team competition. She won bronze in the individual.

In 1980 Thelma Thall was inducted into the US Hall of Fame , and in 2005 she received the Mark Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award for her services to table tennis .
