Dick Miles
Dick Miles (born June 12, 1925 in Manhattan ; † October 12, 2010 ibid) was an American table tennis player . He took part in ten world championships until 1967 and became world champion in mixed in 1948.
Career
Dick Miles was ten times champion of the US Open in singles between 1945 and 1962. From 1947 to 1967 he was nominated ten times for world championships . He won silver in the team competition when he first participated in 1947 . He achieved his greatest success in 1948 when he became world champion in mixed with Thelma Thall ; in the final they defeated the Czechoslovak couple Bohumil Váňa / Vlasta Depetrisová . In the team competition he won bronze in 1948 and 1949 . In 1949 he also reached the semi-finals in doubles with Douglas Cartland .
In 1968 he published his book The Game of Table Tennis ( ISBN 978-0397008780 ). In 2002 he received the Mark Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award .
Private
In 1970 Dick Miles met Mary Detsch, whom he married in 1993.
