Douglas Cartland

Douglas "Doug" Cartland (born July 20, 1914 , † 2002 ) was an American table tennis player . He participated in four world championships in the 1940s and 1950s. He was also active in some German clubs.

Career

For the first time Douglas Cartland took part in the 1949 World Cup, which took place in Stockholm. Here he won bronze in the team competition and in doubles with Dick Miles . Because of bad behavior during and after the tournament - he was offensive about Sweden - he was banned from the American table tennis association USATT for one year. At the 1951 World Cup he reached fourth place with the team, in 1952 he reached the quarterfinals in singles and in doubles with Marty Reisman in the semifinals. When he last participated in the World Cup in 1957 , he competed in singles and doubles, but was eliminated early. In 1951 he was ranked 14th in the ITTF world rankings .

In the early 1960s he also played in some German clubs, such as PPC Neu Isenburg and 1962/63 with TG Friedberg (Oberliga).

The focus of his sporting activities were exhibition fights, with which he earned money in many countries. He often appeared here with Harry Cook († 1950), Marty Reisman and Sol Schiff .

In 1984 Douglas Cartland was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the American table tennis association USATT.
