Sol Schiff (born June 28, 1917 in Manhattan (New York), † February 26, 2012 in New York ) was an American table tennis player . He participated in four world championships . He was world champion with the US team in 1937 and doubles in 1938.

Active time

Left-handed Sol Schiff began playing table tennis in 1925. He made rapid progress and won the 1934 American Open Championships in singles and doubles, a year later he became US National Champion in singles. In 1935 he was nominated for the first time - at the age of 18 - for the world championship . Here he survived the first round in the singles against the Englishman Leo Baron and then lost against Isays Joffe from Latvia. In the subsequent consolation round of losers, he won the final against Englishman Alec Brook.

At the 1937 World Cup he won the gold medal with the American men's team. He was only defeated once in 22 games. In 1938 he reached the quarter-finals in London in singles and mixed, was third in team competition and in doubles with James McClure world champion before the Hungarians Victor Barna / László Bellák .

In the 1930s, Sol Schiff held exhibition fights. In 1939 he wrote the book Table Tennis Comes of Age . During the Second World War he served in the army.

After the war he still took part in the 1947 World Cup and won silver with the team. He won a total of five times at open Canadian championships.

In the ITTF world rankings he finished fifth in 1938.

Time after that

In the 1950s and 1960s he showed exhibition fights again. In 1976 he became president of the American table tennis association USATT. He held this post for eight years, then again from 1986 to 1988. He also traded table tennis items.

In 1991 he received the ITTF Merit Award for his services . He was inducted into the USATT Hall of Fame in 1966. In 2000 he received the Mark Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award .
