Reason for the founding of GHND: underground car park entrance in Salzgasse and modernist extension behind the Coselpalais

The Society Historischer Neumarkt Dresden e. V. (GHND) is an association founded in 1999 which is committed to the reconstruction of the historical city center of Dresden as far as possible , and has thus achieved a controversial response that goes beyond Dresden.

The association called for initially, the environment of 2005 reconstructed Frauenkirche , the Neumarkt , redesign along the lines of historical development, that is based on small-scale plots and the greatest possible restoration of the facades and the roof landscape before 1945. The association was able to achieve partial success However, the city's locally appointed design commission often prevailed with its demands for modernist breaks within the baroque quarters.

Outside the Neumarkt, the GHND is also campaigning for a new version and for reconstructions on the Königsufer (Neustädter Elbufer) and the Neustädter Markt on the other side of the Elbe, in particular for the former baroque town hall and valuable community center buildings.

The GHND operates its own information pavilion, has a wealth of lecture and publication activities and sees itself as an instrument of civil society engagement. It is networked nationally and internationally, for example with Stadtbild Deutschland e. V. , INTBAU , with A Vision of Europe and Friends of Dresden in the USA. It is also financially supported by the Max Kade Foundation New York . Since 2009, the society has expanded its programmatic objectives: It now generally advocates the “preservation and reconstruction of the historical evidence of architecture and urban development in Dresden's inner old town that characterize the cityscape”. On December 11, 2010, their “friend and generous sponsor”, the German-American Nobel Prize winner and President of the “Friends of Dresden”, Günter Blobel, was elected an honorary member of the Society.

In 2018, GHND chairman Torsten Kulke was awarded the Henry Hope Reed Award from the University of Notre Dame for his commitment .
