Localization of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany

The TV tower Dequede is located southeast of Osterburger local part Dequede in the district of Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany).

It was built from reinforced concrete between 1956 and 1959 as the first television tower in the GDR based on the model of the Stuttgart television tower . The 184.5 meter high tower was designed by Gerhard Frost and is not open to the public.

history

Postage stamp from 1978

The foundation stone for the tower was laid on October 12, 1956 . The concrete work began the next day. On August 28, 1957, the tower reached a height of 99.1 meters. It started operations on October 25, 1959 and has been broadcasting color television programs since 1969.

Heinz Wenisch, who was the head of the facility for 36 years, reported in a newspaper interview in 2014 why the tower in Dequede was built: “It was quite simply necessary, as part of the further expansion of the TV and VHF network in the Altmark area To set up an operating site ”. It became even more important to close the radio link from Rostock via Schwerin to Berlin and later to have a transfer point for Intervision and Eurovision near the border .

In 1978, the German post office of the GDR brought to the World Telecommunication Day, a 10-pfennig stamp out on the next to a broadcast van of the turret body of the television tower Dequede was seen.

On May 20, 2008, a new antenna was installed with the help of a helicopter in order to create the conditions for broadcasting digital television DVB-T. Since the new DVB-T2 standard was launched on March 28, 2017 and this achieves a higher range than DVB-T, the transmitter was no longer needed and was therefore switched off that day.

description

The tower stands at a height of 57.6 meters above sea level. The 180 meter high tower consists of a 124.8 meter high concrete tower shaft and an adjoining steel antenna. A platform is located at 119.1 meters. The depth of the foundation is 4.5 meters.
