The NDR transmitter Kiel is a broadcasting facility of the North German Broadcasting Corporation for VHF and DAB, until 2004 also for medium wave and TV.

prehistory

On March 7, 1926, the "Nordmarksender" in Kronshagen am Heischberg began transmitting on medium wave 1288 kHz with only 1.5 kW (later 1292 kHz; 0.3 kW). At that time, the competing NORAG had been operating a medium wave transmitter in Hamburg for two years. As early as 1931, the Kiel transmitter was again missing from official frequency lists. After the "Lucerne Wave Conference of 1933" to determine the frequencies in Europe from January 15, 1934, the Kiel transmitter was superfluous as part of the "large-scale broadcasting network" at that time. The " Reichssender Hamburg " comprised two powerful 100 kW medium wave transmitters (904 kHz).

In the post-war period, as a result of the 1948 Copenhagen Wave Plan, only very low transmission powers were permitted in the single- frequency network in the British occupation zone . It was only after 1950 that the Kiel transmitter operated its own weak MW transmitter (1586 kHz; 5 kW). This frequency was briefly changed to 1570 kHz in 1966 and then reduced in 1970 to 827 kHz with only 0.5 kW transmission power in accordance with the Geneva Wave Plan from 1974/75. The station was finally switched off in 1993 by the NDR.

Instead, the transmission system was last rented from 1998 to 2004 to the private broadcaster "Power 612" (612 kHz, 10 kW output). The medium wave transmitter has now been dismantled.

Transmitters

The Kronshagen radio station currently consists of a transmission mast:

  • A 191 meter high steel lattice mast with a square cross-section, insulated from the earth. It stood from 1949 to 1963 on the area of the Billwerder-Moorfleet transmitter in Hamburg , was dismantled in 1964 and rebuilt in Kronshagen .
  • In addition, there is a cell phone tower made of precast concrete.

A tubular steel mast about 50 meters high and insulated from the ground, which served as a medium-wave reserve antenna, was demolished in the summer of 2010. A 104-meter-high, grounded steel lattice mast erected in 1955, which last served as a reserve antenna for VHF and also broadcast a medium-wave program until 2004, was dismantled from October 23, 2012 due to excessive maintenance costs.

There was a line connection between the two largest masts. By shifting the height of the coupling rope, an optimal base point impedance could be achieved, which could easily be transformed into the cable impedance.

The Kronshagen radio station also served to broadcast TV until the switch to DVB-T in November 2004. Since then, the television program for the Kiel area has only been broadcast via Deutsche Telekom AG's Kiel telecommunications tower .
