Bayerischer Rundfunk has been operating a radio and television transmitter on the Wendelstein since 1954 .
A free-standing tubular steel mast is used as the antenna carrier. Although it is only 55 m high, thanks to its location it can supply almost the entire Bavarian foothills of the Alps and parts of Austria with TV and VHF programs. In May 2005, the analog broadcasting of ARD , ZDF and Bavarian television was discontinued and replaced by digital broadcasting in the DVB-T standard. All Munich multiplexes are also broadcast from Wendelstein and can therefore be easily received in large parts of Upper Bavaria .
Today, all of the Bavarian broadcasting systems in southern Bavaria are monitored remotely from Wendelstein, provided they are unoccupied due to the time of day or permanently. The transmitter operations center for the northern Bavarian region is located on Dillberg .
history
The Wendelstein transmitter was put into operation on January 3, 1950 on the VHF frequency 88.5 MHz for Bavaria 2 . Due to the European Broadcasting Agreement Stockholm 1952 , this frequency had to be shifted to 90.0 MHz on July 1, 1953, after it was in the meantime at 88.9 MHz. In 1954 the transmission power was increased from initially 1 kW to 100 kW and at the same time the frequency 93.6 MHz for Bavaria 1 was put into operation. In 1961 the VHF frequencies were re-coordinated, with the 90.0 MHz frequency changed to 89.5 MHz and the 93.6 MHz frequency changed to 93.7 MHz.
TV signals came from Wendelstein for the first time in early November 1954, for which a 100 kW TV transmitter for VHF channel 10 was installed.
Just 10 years later, Bayerischer Rundfunk built a new 55-meter-high transmission mast and on November 1, 1964 put the 98.5 MHz frequency with 35 kilowatts into operation for its guest worker program Bayern 3 .
Bayern 4 Klassik was first broadcast from Wendelstein on October 4, 1984, initially on the 103.3 MHz frequency with 5 kilowatts, then from the end of 1986 on 102.3 MHz with the full 100 kilowatts of transmission power. In 1989 the RDS was put into operation. The next VHF frequency did not take long, as the guest worker program with 2 kilowatts of power was broadcast on the 105.7 MHz frequency as early as 1988, and after it was discontinued in May 1991, B5 current . At the end of 1992 this frequency was also increased to the full 100 kilowatts.
Digital radio (DAB) was initially activated as a pilot project on June 8, 1995, and then in regular operation from 1999. After initially only the DAB ensemble was broadcast on 12D, the BR-Mux on 11D with 4 kilowatts of power was added on December 16, 2010.
In April 2005, as part of the conversion to DVB-T , the transmission mast was given a new tip made of glass fiber reinforced plastic with the new UHF antennas.
