The transmitter from the air

The high arch transmitter of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation on the 976 m high Burgstall near Furth im Wald bears the name of the ridge. It is used to distribute VHF and TV programs and as a location for directional radio antennas and has existed since 1952. The originally 30 meter high freestanding steel lattice tower was replaced in 1964 by a 72 meter high tower made of reinforced concrete . Its antenna carrier was buckled in a storm in 1974. Until the restoration of the system in 1977, the programs were broadcast via temporarily installed antennas with low transmission power.

On October 17, 2006, the antenna for analog TV broadcasting was dismantled. It had been decommissioned since mid-August. The following day it was replaced by a new antenna for DVB-T . The work was carried out with a special Kamow Ka-32 A helicopter . On December 6, 2006, DVB-T in Eastern Bavaria started here as well as with the stations Hohe Linie , Brotjacklriegel and Pfarrkirchen .

history

According to the original plans, the area of the Hoher Bogen transmitter was to be supplied via the Ochsenkopf and Brotjacklriegel transmitter locations , but it turned out that these locations were too far away to adequately supply the area. In the course of this, in the summer of 1951, the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation erected a 20-meter-high tubular mast at the location of today's Hoher Bogen transmitter in order to check the propagation properties of the ultra-short wave in this area and thus test the suitability of the location. After the positive outcome of this test, construction work began on the broadcasting building on May 19, 1952 , the completion of which was celebrated with a topping-out ceremony on August 1, 1952 . The associated transmission mast, a 30-meter-high lattice mast, began operation on October 27, 1952 and broadcast radio on the frequency 89.3 MHz with an effective radiated power of 20 kilowatts, initially a mixed program of the first and second radio programs, since then September 29, 1957 only the first program. On January 11, 1963, a new frequency for the second radio program was put into operation.

However, television reception in the region remained difficult for a long time. Above all, the city of Furth im Wald repeatedly complained to Bayerischer Rundfunk about the poor television coverage in the area. In April 1961, representatives of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation finally negotiated with the city of Furth im Wald, and in the summer of 1961 construction began to put the television station into operation. The first program broadcast for the first time on December 21, 1962 on UHF channel 55, which at the time of commissioning was Bavaria's most powerful TV station in Band V with an output of 225 kW . Given the date, many residents referred to the commissioning as a Christmas present.

In 1964, the Deutsche Bundespost showed interest in using the Hoher Bogen broadcasting site to broadcast the second and third television programs, but since the lattice mast's capacity was exhausted, a new broadcasting mast had to be built. The decision was made in favor of a concrete tower, construction work started in September 1964 and was completed on October 30, 1964 with a height of 50 meters. Together with the antenna carrier, which was mounted on the tower in 1965, the height of the tower at that time was 83 meters. The construction of the transmission tower cost 650,000 DM, including the necessary expansion of the transmission building, the construction work of the Deutsche Bundespost cost 1.4 million DM. The second television program went on the air on November 4, 1965, the third television program followed on December 16, 1969. In the following time, numerous filling transmitters were set up in the transmission area to supply remote areas that were not directly reached by the basic network transmitter.

In 1974, during a storm, the antenna support on which the television antennas were located bent over. A new antenna support was erected in October 1976; this is 10 meters smaller, which results in the current height of the transmission tower. In the years 1976 and 1977 the system was completely modernized, in the course of which the third radio program started on July 15, 1977. From October 28, 1983, what was then Bayern 4 Klassik was broadcast from the Hoher Bogen location. On August 1, 1988, the ARD guest worker program followed , which later became the news program B5 . Shortly afterwards, on September 15, 1988, the private radio program Antenne Bayern started .
