The Ochsenkopf Transmitter is a 191.5 meter high TV tower in reinforced concrete , which since 1958 at the summit of Ochsenkopf in Fichtelgebirge located. Analog radio ( UKW ), digital radio ( DAB ) and digital television ( DVB-T ) are broadcast from the transmitter mast . It also serves as a directional radio node .

The Ochsenkopf's transmitter mast was built to replace a 50-meter-high guyed tubular steel mast that collapsed in January 1958 due to icing. Despite the curvature of the earth, it has a direct line of sight to the Kreuzberg transmitter about 135.3 kilometers away in the Rhön .

history

The station before the DVB-T conversion (recording: April 2007)

With the program of today's Bayern 2 , the VHF broadcasts from Ochsenkopf began in October 1950 . The Asenturm initially served as an antenna carrier before a 22-meter high lattice tower was built in 1951 . When the Ochsenkopf broadcast the first German television five years later , Bayerischer Rundfunk built a 50-meter-high tube mast that fell victim to a storm in 1958. In the same year, today's reinforced concrete tower was completed.

The total height was 163 meters until September 2008. With the conversion to DVB-T, the tower received a 25-meter-high GRP cylinder . The tower is a total of 191.5 meters high, the tower diameter is 22 meters at the foundation and 2 meters at the top.

The television tower with the ARD television station on channel 4 in VHF band I made it possible to receive western television in large parts of the GDR , even some residents of Leipzig and Dresden , the " valley of the unsuspecting ", with the help of a so-called ox - head antenna .

Even in Görlitz was FM radio reception from Ochsenkopf circumstances possible, but there was the reception of the station from West Berlin widespread.

The analog television of ARD was switched off on 25 November 2008. favor of DVB-T. Reception was also possible in Zittau (weather)
