Localization of Bavaria in Germany

The transmitter Kreuzberg is a broadcasting system of the Bavarian Radio which has existed since 1951 on the Kreuzberg , a 927.8  m above sea level. NHN high mountain near Bischofsheim in the Rhön in the Bavarian district of Rhön-Grabfeld in the German low mountain range Rhön .

The transmitter mast is almost 227 m high. Broadcast FM radio and digital radio and television programs. The mast is also used by numerous radio network operators.

History and description

The transmitter has existed since 1951. At that time, an FM transmitter was set up to transmit the second program (today's Bayern2Radio ). From 1956, the first TV program (today's Das Erste ) of the ARD was broadcast by a new transmitter .

In 1960 a 156 m high tubular steel mast was erected to support new VHF and television antennas, which significantly improved the range, and in 1985 a 208 m high one. The latter weighed 140 tons without antennas; inside the mast there was a ladder with about 800 steps and it took about an hour to climb.

The station has also broadcast DAB since 2003 .

In favor of the switch to DVB-T , the analogue ARD channel for Das Erste (channel 3) was discontinued on May 29, 2006. The analog programs BR and ZDF were broadcast by the neighboring Heidelstein transmitter . Photos after July 2006 show that the 16 large turnstiles (tongue-shaped antennas) for Volume I have been dismantled. These can still be seen on older recordings of the mast - above the turnstiles for VHF. The antennas for DVB-T are a special design for directional operation and are therefore mounted on a vertical holding device to the side of the mast tube. DAB is emitted from the top level (horizontal dipole lines, due to the special arrangement of these, also here with a preferred direction). On November 25, 2008, the conversion of the basic network transmitter to DVB-T in Bavaria was completed.

On August 17, 2016, the transmission mast was raised to a height of 227 m with a GRP cylinder. In the new cylinder there is an antenna system for DVB-T2 television broadcasting.

The ZDFmobil - Multiplex with the programs ZDF , 3sat , KiKA / ZDFneo and ZDFinfo comes from the station Heidelstein , which is located in the Bavarian Rhön, but is used by the Hessischer Rundfunk to supply East Hesse. Other VHF programs not broadcast by the Kreuzberg station come from there .

DVB-T reception from the Hessian Rhine-Main area is usually also possible. From there come the private broadcasting groups RTL Group and ProSiebenSat.1 Media , as well as a mixed private bouquet, which also contains Tele 5 . A roof antenna aligned vertically at the Großer Feldberg im Taunus location is the best solution in this regard. Indoor or outdoor antenna reception may also be possible in favorable locations.
