Localization of Baden-Württemberg in Germany

The TV tower Heidelberg is a broadcast tower of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) for radio and television on the Königstuhl .

Four FM radio programs from the SWR, two nationwide DAB ensembles from Digital Radio Südwest on channel 11 B with 10 kW, the nationwide DAB multiplex on channel 5 C with 10 kW, and the DVB-T offer from ARD are fed by the system / SWR and ZDF broadcast.

Because of the exposed location of the site, the tower itself is only 82 m high (approx. 570 m above sea level, 430 m above the Rhine plain). The transmitters cover almost the entire north Baden area, the Vorderpfalz and Südhessen ( Rhine-Neckar region ).

At a height of 30 m, the tower, which was built in 1958, has an unglazed viewing platform that can be reached using an elevator. The tower is currently being renovated and the platform has been closed to the public since 2002. The SWR, which bought the tower from the city of Heidelberg, does not currently plan to reopen the viewing platform. In addition, the tower was also used as a water tower until 2002. The water tank is located in the tower pulpit.

On the Königstuhl, in the immediate vicinity of the television tower, there is also a slightly higher telecommunications tower for Deutsche Telekom and a former telecommunications tower for the US Army , which was built in the late 1950s and returned to the state of Baden-Württemberg in mid-2007.

After the Second World War , around 1948, the first German television broadcasting service for the Rhine-Neckar region was made possible for the first time by several steel half-timbered constructions. These were replaced in 1958 by today's reinforced concrete tower.

Analog television (PAL)

Before the switch to DVB-T, the television tower in Heidelberg broadcast the program Das Erste . The double broadcast can be attributed to the fact that channel 7 was only broadcast to the east to supply the Odenwald valleys, while channel 50 worked with omnidirectional radiation.
