The Aurich-Popens transmitter is a basic network transmitter in Aurich-Popens and is operated by Norddeutscher Rundfunk . It ensures the basic terrestrial broadcasting service for TV ( DVB-T ) and radio ( DAB , VHF radio ) on the East Frisian peninsula and in Ammerland . Only Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Radio Ostfriesland and Radio 21 (all UKW, DLF Kultur is also broadcast via DAB + from the Popens station) are not broadcast from here, but from the Aurich-Haxtum media broadcast. A 238-meter-high, guyed tubular steel mast is used as the antenna carrier at the Aurich-Popens site, which is the sixth highest structure in East Frisia - after five antennas from the Navy's DHO38 long-wave transmitter in the municipality of Ostrhauderfehn .

history

The Aurich-Popens transmitter went into operation on May 4, 1961 with the broadcast of German television on Kanal 39. In the fall of 1961, the station switched to channel 53. The program was initially broadcast via a temporary antenna at a height of 130 meters. The final antenna was put into service on July 10, 1962 at the top of the transmission tower. The code of the test pattern broadcast in the event of interference with the transmitter was here and also for other television programs broadcast later on East Frisia .

The NWDR radio programs were initially broadcast from the company premises in Osterloog . Shortly before the site was sold to what was then Deutsche Bundespost and Norddeich Radio took over operations there , they moved to Aurich-Popens on March 7, 1964, thereby ensuring better VHF coverage. The program NDR 1 was broadcast on 90.05 MHz and NDR 2 on 95.80 MHz with 25 kW each, after which only 3 kW were available in Osterloog. In addition, the NWDR was broadcast on the medium wave frequency 701 kHz with 5 kW.

On April 1, 1964, NDR 3 went on air on 98.15 MHz with 25 kW. The third NDR television program followed on September 9, 1966 on channel 43.

NDR 2 began broadcasting in stereo on November 5, 1967. The young technology was designed for this right from the start and the Aurich transmitter broadcast in stereo. The medium wave transmitter on 701 kHz was switched off on March 14, 1977. The connection of the Deutschlandfunk to 101.8 MHz took place on December 23, 1986 with 2 kW. The power was later increased to 100 kW.

The first private broadcaster in Lower Saxony, Radio ffn , went on air on December 23, 1986 on 103.1 MHz. It was followed on May 21, 1990 by the second private broadcaster, Antenne Niedersachsen, on 104.9 MHz. The intrusion of NDR Info 96.4 MHz with 10 kW took place on November 5, 1991. On April 8, 1995, the program was N-Joy Radio switched to 92.7 MHz with 1 kW.

All analog television programs ( PAL standard ) were switched off on May 22, 2006 and digital broadcasting ( DVB-T standard ) began with three bouquets .

The national DAB + program package was activated on October 1, 2015, followed by the North German Broadcasting’s DAB + program package on November 24, 2015 .
