The Eifel transmitter is a broadcasting facility of the Südwestrundfunk for VHF radio and television near Kirchweiler in the Eifel . The 302 meter high guyed steel lattice mast is located on the Scharteberg in the Vulkaneifel district and replaced an older 160 meter high guyed mast in 1985. The new building became necessary because the programs broadcast by the old mast did not achieve the necessary signal strength for interference-free reception in the shaded valleys of the Eifel.
construction
The lower 20 meters of the mast were erected using a small crane, the mast elements at heights between 20 meters and 100 meters using a crane truck. A derrick crane was used for the higher mast elements .
The mast is composed of a 288 meter high, guyed, steel lattice mast with a side length of 2.1 meters and a 14 meter high GRP cylinder at the top, which is designed to accommodate UHF television antennas. The total weight is 204 tons. The mast is guyed on four levels: 57 meters, 123 meters, 195 meters and 273 meters above the ground. It has an elevator that can travel up to a height of 281 meters. 20 red neon lamps and two flashing lights with 1000 watt lamps are installed as flight warning lights.
The transmission mast is the tallest structure in Rhineland-Palatinate and can be seen from afar.

- A)It is possible that there are locations that receive signals on channel 30 from both the Eifel transmitter and the Nordhelle transmitter (Ebbegebirge). The transmitters are therefore synchronized, but do not form an SFN, since the ZDF program is broadcast on a different frequency (channel 28) in between. The transmitter in Giersberg (Siegen) is geographically shielded, as is the transmitter on the Brocken, which only broadcasts to the east on channel 30.
DVB-T2 HD (from 2018)
On November 28, 2018, the switch to DVB-T2 HD took place in regular operation together with the Mosel-Saar regions ( telecommunications tower Trier-Petrisberg ) and the Palatinate with the broadcasters Donnersberg and telecommunications tower Kaiserslautern , with three bouquet from ARD, ZDF and SWR.
