The Mulleklenkes is a transmission tower located about 7 km southwest of Aachen city center . It stands on the Karlshöhe , a ridge in the Aachen city forest , near the triangle of three countries and in the immediate vicinity of the Belgian border. This makes it the most westerly station in Germany. The 133 m high tower ( type tower FMT 12 ) was completed in 1984. The construction costs amounted to DM 5.6 million. The operator and owner of the system is Deutsche Funkturm (DFMG), a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom based in Münster .

Mulleklenkes is not a nickname , but the official name of the tower. The name is composed of the two Öcher-Platt words mullen (klönen, schwatzen) and Klenkes (splayed little finger of the right hand, Aachen identification mark). The transmitter itself is referred to as the Aachen-Stadt or Aachen-Karlshöhe transmitter .

Frequencies and Programs

Analog radio (FM)

Radio NRW has been broadcasting local radio from here since 1992 . Initially, the Radio Aachen program for the city of Aachen was broadcast on the frequency 100.1 MHz . Antenna AC has also been broadcast on the frequency of 100.1 MHz since the station was closed and the reception region was taken over by Antenne AC , which is now responsible for the entire Aachen city region .

The 102.7 MHz frequency of Deutschlandfunk interferes with the frequencies of the DLF from the station Wesel (102.8 MHz) and from the station Nordhelle (102.7 MHz), which is why the reception of the program is only possible in the immediate vicinity of the station without noise and interference is.

In the past, the Radio Alaaf program was also broadcast on the 97.7 MHz frequency during Carnival time.

Digital radio (DAB +)

The nationwide DABplus multiplex (also called “Bundesmux”) went into operation in August 2011 with 27 transmitters. Since then, these start islands have been expanded into a nationwide transmitter network. It is of particular importance because for the first time individual regions are supplied that were not yet reached by digital radio at the time and the DAB successor standard AAC (DAB +) was introduced for the first time in other regions.

The federal mux in channel 5C is distributed from this location with 5 kW. Since broadcasts also take place on the channel in neighboring countries, the broadcast is directed. There is consequently a fading out to the west.

The smaller transmission powers represent filling stations and supplied the Preuswald and Bildchen settlements south of the transmission tower. The transmission power in the hundreds of kW range, which is quite significant compared to today, was used for the basic network transmitters , which radiated in the north-east to supply Aachen and the surrounding area. The private television programs were switched off in connection with the introduction of DVB-T in the greater Cologne / Bonn area on November 8, 2004. The television program RTL on channel 26 was switched off on May 24, 2004.

Former digital television (DVB-T)

The DVB-T broadcasts from Mulleklenkes ran in single-frequency operation (Single Frequency Network) with other transmitter sites. On November 20, 2007, the analog television signals were replaced by the following DVB-T broadcasts (in vertical polarization ): On March 29, 2017, the transmission was discontinued with the introduction of DVB-T2 .
