Telecommunication tower Hünenburg

The telecommunications tower in Hünenburg is a 164 m high telecommunications tower belonging to the Deutsche Funkturm , a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom . It was built in 1972 by the Deutsche Bundespost on the Hünenburg in Bielefeld in what is now the Brackwede district . The type tower of type FMT 3/72 is not open to the public. In the immediate vicinity is the old telecommunications tower , which has been decommissioned and is now used as a lookout tower .

The telecommunications tower in Hünenburg has a cylindrical operating room with a volume of 2,500 cubic meters at a height of 40 m. A platform with directional antennas is located on this at a height of 49.6 m . The tower carries a second, smaller platform with directional antennas at a height of 55 m. Additional platforms for smaller directional radio antennas exist at heights of 89 m and 123.5 m. The antennas for VHF radio are attached to the red and white painted antenna support between 123.5 m and 146.25 m . The top, from a height of 146.5 m, is a GRP cylinder which, after being replaced in July 2018, contains more powerful UHF transmitting antennas.

In addition, the telecommunications tower is the tallest structure in Bielefeld.

Frequencies and Programs

Analog radio (VHF)

The VHF program BFBS 1 was broadcast from January 2, 1986 up to and including April 26, 2020 with a considerable power of 70.8 kW on the frequency 103.0 MHz. After the withdrawal of a large part of the British armed forces, this last high-reach BFBS frequency in Germany was abandoned and instead transmitters with regionally receivable frequencies at the Paderborn-Sennelager military training area , in Herford , Minden and Gütersloh (Friedrichsdorf) for BFBS Germany were put into operation.

Digital radio ( DAB / DAB + )

Since May 25, 2012, the Hünenburg telecommunications tower has also been broadcasting digital radio in DAB +. The nationwide multiplex is transmitted in vertical polarization on DAB channel 5C in the single-frequency network with other transmitters.

Digital television ( DVB-T / DVB-T2 )

In Ostwestfalen-Lippe , the changeover to the DVB-T2 standard with HEVC picture coding took place on April 25, 2018. Freenet TV's private program offering , which was only added on August 20, 2018 due to a delayed antenna replacement, is broadcast by the Hünenburg telecommunications tower in single-frequency operation sent to the Osnabrück (Schinkelturm) and Münster (city) locations . Optionally, additional programs included in the WDR offer and with Freenet TV connect as a link can be played via an Internet connection, if the receiving device supports HbbTV (from version 1.5) (WDR via IP: ARD-alpha HD , BR FS Süd HD , hr-fernsehen HD , rbb Berlin HD and SR Fernsehen HD ).

The following DVB-T2 bouquets are transmitted:

Renewal of the top in 2018

On July 26, 2018, the tip of the Swiss specialty company Swiss Helicopter, formerly Heliswiss, was replaced with a Kamow Ka-32A12 transport helicopter in order to broadcast six DVB-T2 multiplexes via powerful UHF transmission antennas. First, an intermediate ring was installed with the helicopter as a connecting segment before the 15 m high and 4.3 ton GRP cylinder with a diameter of approx. 1.6 m could be placed on the tower.

Observation tower

View from the Hünenburg telecommunications tower

As early as 1952, the Deutsche Bundespost had a telecommunications tower built on the Hünenberg. It was required for the FREDA radio relay ( frequency- modulated decimeter wave system ) on the Hamburg – Cologne television transmission line operated by the then NWDR . This tower became superfluous with the construction of the new type tower in 1972 and was dismantled, with the antenna platforms being removed and some false ceilings inserted. Today it is used as a lookout tower with a café and a museum on the history of the Hünenberg. From the 40-meter-high viewing platform with all-round visibility, a wide view of the Teutoburg Forest can be thrown.
