The telecommunications tower in Calau is a transmission tower for television and radio programs, mobile communications and radio relay in the southern Brandenburg city of Calau . It went into operation in April 1987 after two years of construction.
With a height of 190 meters, the transmission tower is of the same type as the tower erected in 1988 on the Schafberg near Löbau and thus the penultimate tower built before the fall of the Berlin Wall . On December 12, 2006, the switch from analog television to DVB-T took place . The tower was completely renovated in 2010 and 2012.
On April 26, 2011, there was a fire in the transmitter systems 120 meters away, which led to their complete failure. After the programs were initially broadcast by smaller transmitters in the area as a substitute, they have been broadcast from the broadcast tower again since the beginning of June 2011, but initially only provisionally. The original condition was completely restored in June 2012 when the flight obstruction lights went into operation .

Digital television (DVB-T2)
Regular operation of DVB-T2 HD began on April 3, 2019. Since then, the programs of ARD ( rbb -Mux) and ZDF have been broadcasting in the DVB-T2 standard using the HEVC video coding process and in Full HD resolution. Analog television
The program DDR 1 was broadcast from 1958 in VHF band I on channel 4. The first program of the ARD was broadcast on the same channel from the Ochsenkopf in the Fichtelgebirge. In April 1987 the new broadcast tower went on air with the TVs of GDR 1 and GDR 2 with two UHF channels. Therefore, the previous broadcast of DDR 1 via channel 4 from the still existing lattice mast could be abandoned, and the program from DDR I was then broadcast on UHF channel 53 via the new tower.
The television program DDR 2 was broadcast in UHF band IV on channel 23. This bothered u. a. In the Chemnitz area (by irradiation in the back lobe , 180 °), the reception of the ZDF , which was also broadcast in Hof on channel 23, significantly increased . The transmission power on channel 23 in Calau was 1 MW, in Hof 500 kW. It can be assumed that this disruption of western television was known to the political leadership of the GDR.
After reunification , the following analog television programs were broadcast until DVB-T was introduced:

The first Calau television tower

It was 90 m high and ended Demolished in 1989 after the Calau telecommunications tower went into operation.
