The Leipzig radio tower is a 191 meter high transmission tower built in 2015 in the Zentrum-Südost district in Leipzig ( Saxony ) for the distribution of digital terrestrial television (DVB-T2) and digital radio ( DAB + ).

construction

It is the tallest freestanding steel lattice tower built for radio technology purposes in Germany and, after the chimney of the steel and hard cast iron works Bösdorf in Knautnaundorf (205 meters), the second tallest structure in Leipzig. The tower is on the corner of Richard-Lehmann- and Zwickauer Strasse near the old exhibition grounds and within sight of the Panometer . It was built by the Berlin company Steffens & Nölle GmbH on behalf of Deutsche Funkturm GmbH , a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG .

The four foundation blocks, each 25 meters apart, hold 250 cubic meters of concrete. The grid structure made of hot-dip galvanized steel has a mass of 300 tons . The production and delivery of the steel structure was carried out by the Spanish specialist in steel lattice masts Imedexsa. The transmitting antennas are surrounded by a 21 meter high sheathing made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) with a lightning basket at its tip.

Up to this height, the tower was assembled with a mobile 1200-tonne large crane, with the individual levels being prefabricated on the ground. On September 28, 2015, work began on placing the subsegments on the tower shaft. The final height without antenna was reached on October 3rd. On October 26th, the 21 meter high antenna shaft with the lightning basket was assembled in three parts with a Super Puma transport helicopter . The tower with its final height of 191 m is now ready to accommodate the technical equipment.

Before that, the Deutsche Funkturm AG used a chimney of the Stadtwerke Leipzig located about 500 meters away . The new building took place because no extensions were possible at the old transmitter site.

business

Operation of the tower began on May 16, 2016 with the broadcasting of the radio stations as digital radio ( DAB ). Initially, the Germany-wide DAB + program block 5C and DAB block 9A (Saxony) were transmitted in vertical polarization and in single-frequency operation with other transmitters. Since January 31, 2018, the local multiplex DAB + Leipzig has been broadcast on Kanal 6C with 15 private radio programs. The transition to regular operation took place on January 31, 2020 with 14 programs (see table for details).

Television operations started with provisional operations on May 31, 2016. Six programs in HD quality were transmitted via DVB-T2: ARD , ZDF , Sat.1 , ProSieben , RTL and VOX . Since March 29, 2017, the complete range of programs has been broadcast as shown in the table below.
