The Halle radio tower is the second highest freestanding steel lattice tower built for radio technical purposes in Germany (after the Leipzig radio tower ). It was built in 2005 in Halle (Saale) ( Saxony-Anhalt ) by Steffens & Nölle GmbH on behalf of Deutsche Telekom AG for the distribution of television programs in DVB-T mode and is 160.5 meters high.
Broadcasting
DVB-T operation officially started on December 5, 2005. Since then, only public-law programs have been broadcast ; private television companies initially did not apply for a license due to the limited range. However, on April 30, 2009, the Saxon State Media Authority granted the RTL broadcasting group approval in the Leipzig-Halle distribution area, after the State Media Authority Saxony-Anhalt had already given its approval. From December 2009 to December 31, 2014, VISEO + was broadcast with six RTL Group channels using the MPEG-4 method. An additional decoder was necessary to decode the signal encoded with Conax .
The pilot broadcast of DVB-T2 HD programs began on May 31, 2016 .
On March 29, 2017, the broadcasting of DVB-T programs ended and regular operation of DVB-T2 HD began. Since then, the programs of the ARD ( MDR -Mux), the ZDF and the commercial offer of freenet TV ( encoded in Irdeto ) have been broadcasting in the DVB-T2 standard using the HEVC video coding process and in Full HD resolution.
In addition to the radio tower in Halle, the TV Halle program in the old DVB-T standard is also transmitted from an office building about three kilometers away on Magdeburger Strasse .
