Officine Meccaniche Tortonesi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Officine Meccaniche Tortonesi (short: OMT ) is an Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer that actually specializes in the production of trailers, but also produced trucks in the 1960s.

The company's origins go back to 1928, when Giuseppe Caldana started a factory to manufacture trailers in Tortona in 1928 . After the Second World War , in 1955, the company was bought up by industrialists from the area and was given the name OMT-Officine Meccaniche Tortonesi , which still exists today .

In 1963, OMT, although specialized in trailers, launched the OMT MF4 heavy duty 8 × 2 truck . In order to be able to utilize the total weight permitted by law in Italy, the truck appeared in the 8 × 2 drive formula and with two steered axles. The driver's cab and other components came from Fiat , the engine was an AEC six-cylinder diesel engine of the type AV 690. There were also vehicles that were equipped with Fiat engines. The truck, designed for 22 tons, was able to carry a payload of 13 tons, but with a trailer it was allowed to reach a truck weight of 44 tons. In the four-year production period, tractor units were also manufactured.

After this "digression" into truck production, the company turned back to trailer construction and still exists today.
