Otto Wenzel (journalist)

Otto Wenzel (born December 30, 1840 in Crossen (Oder) ; † February 7, 1929 in Berlin-Friedenau ) was a journalist, cooperative director and became known for his involvement in the introduction of the "General Normal Accident Prevention Regulations" in German industry.

Life stations

After graduating from high school in Sorau ( Niederlausitz ), Wenzel studied mathematics at the University of Greifswald from the summer semester of 1860 . There he became a member of the Greifswald fraternity Rugia in 1860 . In 1862 he moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin, where he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in Berlin in 1862 . In 1865 he became general secretary of the German Journalists' Day and worked in the editorial department of the magazine Zukunft . At the same time he was parliamentary correspondent in the Prussian state parliament , in the North German Reichstag and in the customs parliament .

In the 1860s he also worked as deputy chairman of the Berlin workers' association. In 1872 Wenzel was involved in founding the Verein für Socialpolitik .

He experienced the war of 1870/71 in the Guard Fusilier Regiment . After the war he became Reichstag correspondent for the Spenersche Zeitung in 1871 and, after it was discontinued in 1874, for the Hamburger Nachrichten . From 1877 to 1907 he was general secretary of the association he co-founded to protect the interests of the chemical industry . In addition, from 1881 to 1884 he was a research assistant at Deutsche Bank Berlin , where he headed the statistical office as Georg von Siemens' assistant , and from 1882 to 1887 he worked at the Brockhaus Lexicon . When the trade association for the chemical industry was founded on September 11, 1885, Wenzel was appointed its first director - with effect from October 1, 1885 - until his retirement in 1908 in Berlin. In addition, he was editor-in-chief of the journal Die Berufsgenossenschaft from 1886 to 1908 . For many years he was treasurer of the Berlin Press Association and, in 1910, played a key role in founding the Reich Association of the German Press . During the First World War he signed up for civil service and was from the end of 1914 to the beginning of 1919 as a shop steward at the headquarters for foreign permits for chemical products . In 1922 the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Greifswald awarded him an honorary doctorate. From 1910 until his death he was a member of the supervisory board of Schering-Kahlbaum AG.

family

On October 26, 1878 Otto Wenzel married Ida Anna Clara Kruse. After the death of his first wife in 1909, Wenzel married Johanna Marie Roggenbau a second time on June 14, 1910, and both marriages produced three children.
