Freenet TV is the paid HDTV platform from Media Broadcast . It is broadcast via DVB-T2 in the respective DVB-T reception areas in Germany and via DVB-S2 via Astra via satellite. The advertising-financed private channels are activated in HD with basic encryption right from the start . Reception without Freenet TV hardware was therefore not possible at any time.

Specifications and usage options

Freenet TV offers the user access to the basic encrypted private channels in HD as well as Freenet TV connect , the successor to the previous multithek . When the platform was launched on May 31, 2016, the private broadcasters RTL HD, Sat.1 HD, ProSieben HD and VOX HD were initially made available to all DVB-T2 users at no additional cost. At the end of the first quarter of 2017, up to 20 additional paid private channels were activated, which could be received for three months at no additional cost. Since the end of this period, reception of these private channels has only been possible against payment (primarily cardless via prepaid). From July 1, 2017, the annual access fee of 69 euros will be due for each receiving device, even if several devices are in the same household. The previous DVB-T broadcasting ended on March 29, 2017. Only the NDR operated a one-month residual Mux in DVB-T standard.

The public service programs can be received free of charge via DVB-T2 HD via a receiver marked with the "DVB-T2 HD" logo at no additional cost and are not part of Freenet TV, as the transmission costs for them are covered by the broadcasting fee. Even DVB-T2 receivers without the logo can usually receive the public broadcasters via DVB-T2 HD, provided they support HEVC , but this is not guaranteed.

The launch via satellite took place on March 28, 2018. As with HD + , the channels are broadcast via DVB-S2 in 1080i and H.264 .

Migration problems when introducing the program offer

Due to the complex technical process, the conversion of the standard from DVB-T to DVB-T2 was associated with individual problems, which were mainly due to the change of frequencies and required a new channel search, in individual cases also a change of location of the antenna or a reset of the Receivers to default settings. The German Telekom has used this situation to having "StartTV" a new entry-level model for exclusively linear TV than streaming offer within Telekom Entertain market.

Certification

Device manufacturers must have their receiving devices ( digital receivers , USB sticks ) certified by FreenetTV in order to receive device-specific decryption codes . This ensures various restrictions according to the specifications of the private broadcasters, including that encrypted broadcasts are also stored in encrypted form on devices with a recording function (PVR = personal video recording ). Recorded programs can therefore only be played back by the device on which they were recorded, and it is also not possible to pass on such programs or to edit or cut them on other devices (e.g. PC ). PVR functions must be activated for private broadcasters from Freenet TV before they can be used. Recordings on televisions with a Freenet TV module are not possible at all. In addition, certified devices prevent advertising blocks from being skipped in recorded programs, and there are further restrictions for time-shifted recordings .
