The Untersberg transmitter is a broadcasting system of the Bavarian Radio on the Untersberg near Salzburg at the 1805 meter high Geiereck, on Austrian territory. The system is used to broadcast radio programs via VHF and DAB as well as television programs via DVB-T .

history

The station had become important because the German Autobahn 8 between the municipality of Anger and the Bavaria-Salzburg border had to be filled with broadcast technology. In addition, there was a desire by some neighboring communities to receive the Bavarian radio and thus the German radio and television programs terrestrially. Planning began in 1964, and in 1970 the transmitter was built on Austrian territory, on the Geiereck at 1805 meters above sea level, and is technically operated by Bayerischer Rundfunk . The Media & Broadcast GmbH (M & B) also operates two Fernsehfüllsender. In addition, Telekom Austria operates a radio relay system in a separate building. Since April 29, 2008 the Untersberg has been broadcasting DVB-T for the Berchtesgaden district. On October 30, 2014, Bayerischer Rundfunk started broadcasting its nationwide digital radio bouquet BR Bavaria with 5 kW transmission power on channel 11D.

Antenna support

The transmission antennas of the radio transmitters are located on the north side of the cable car mountain station. To supply Marktschellenberg and Berchtesgaden there is an antenna carrier set about 50 m to the south, also with transmitting antennas for VHF radio and television ( 47 ° 43 ′ 21.2 ″  N , 13 ° 0 ′ 33.2 ″  E ).

Range

The transmission area of the Untersberg is on the one hand the northern area around Freilassing including the communities Ainring , Saaldorf-Surheim , Teisendorf and Petting , on the other hand the community Marktschellenberg at the southern foot of the Untersberg. Due to the very exposed location, the transmitter has a very long range and can still be received in Salzburg and a large part of the Alpine foothills as well as beyond the Inn .
