The transmitter Helgoland is a 113 m high transmission tower of the Deutsche Telekom AG on the Oberland of the island Helgoland . The steel framework construction with a triangular cross-section was erected in 2000. A special feature of the Helgoland station is that it is also secured by pardunas .
In addition to directional radio, it serves to broadcast digital television ( DVB-T ), analogue ( UKW ) and digital radio ( DAB ).
The first terrestrial frequency for SAT.1 was put into operation on September 4, 1986 on Heligoland . This meant that SAT.1 could no longer only be received via cable, but for the first time also via house antenna .

Analog radio ( VHF )
In the case of directed radiation, the main radiation directions are given in degrees in the antenna diagram.
As the first region in Germany, after one month of DAB and FM simulcast operation on Helgoland, the VHF broadcasts of the programs of the Deutschlandradios were ended on November 2, 2018 in accordance with the specifications of the KEF to reduce distribution costs.

The frequencies of the programs R.SH, delta radio and Radio BOB! have been operated by the broadcasting network operator UPLINK Network GmbH since January 1, 2016 .
Digital radio ( DAB / DAB + )
Since September 27, 2018, digital radio in the DAB + standard has been broadcast in vertical polarization in the single frequency network with other transmitters. The nationwide multiplex was added one day later, in addition to the programs offered by Norddeutscher Rundfunk.
Digital television ( DVB-T / DVB-T2 )
The Helgoland channel was converted to the DVB-T2 standard with HEVC image coding on November 8, 2018. Optionally, additional programs included as links in Freenet TV connect can be played via an Internet connection, if the receiving device supports HbbTV (version 1.5 or higher).

In addition to the location on the Oberland, there is also an antenna on the steep face, which is connected to the transmission tower via an underground cable. This antenna broadcast the public service programs for some houses in the Unterland that were so close to the steep face that they could not receive the programs from the Oberland.
