The telecommunications tower Schleswig is a 139 meter high, not accessible to the public telecommunications tower in the north-west of Schleswig . In addition to directional radio, it is also used to broadcast television ( DVB-T ) and radio programs. It is also used as a base station for mobile communications .

history

planning phase

At the end of the 1980s, the Deutsche Bundespost decided to build a new telecommunications tower due to the growth rates in telephone traffic, text and data services and the emergence of new mobile radio systems. As a preparatory measure, an access road was built in the summer of 1988, starting from Flensburger Strasse. Due to the subsoil ( silt and peat ), the subsoil of this road had to be reinforced with multilayer gravel layers and drained through a drainage system. In addition, a rainwater collecting line and the disposal lines for waste and rainwater were laid.

Tower construction

With the manufacture of the tower base, the actual construction work began in August 1989. The base diameter is 19 meters. 50 t of structural steel and 800 m³ of concrete were used.

In September 1989 the construction of the shaft began. In May 1990 the tower reached a height of 80 meters. Now the construction of the company floor began at a height of 71 meters. For this purpose, the segments of the formwork were prepared on the ground. After attaching the segments to the tower, the "foundation" of the first level was poured. The floor slab of the company floor followed. In June and July 1990, the ceiling of the operating room followed, which is also the first level of the antenna platform. The first antenna supports were installed here. The operating room was clad in autumn 1990.

This was followed by the construction of the tower up to a height of 103 meters. The production of the 3rd level of the antenna platform with a diameter of 15 meters began in October 1990. In November 1990 the second level followed with a diameter of 25 meters.

The delivery of the six individual parts of the 36 meter high spire took place in January 1991. Each of these individual parts has a mass of around seven tons. Since the tower is designed for a maximum wind speed of 150 km / h, the top of the tower was fastened inside with 96 steel cables, which together are designed for a weight of 12.24  MN .

The topping-out ceremony took place on February 14, 1991.

In the spring of 1991 the 2.4 m long lightning rod , the electrical systems and the elevator were installed. The tower was designed in color. The artist Erich Lethgau from Stubben developed the color concept for this. The tower was equipped with antennas from mid-April 1991.

With the completion of the construction work in the spring of 1992, the total costs amounted to 13 million Deutschmarks .

Operation of the tower

Together with the Schleswig-Holstein newspaper publisher and the business people at Lattenkamp, Telekom organized a competition to find a nickname for the telecommunications tower. From the 258 suggestions, the jury decided on the name "Schliekieker".

The Schleswig telecommunications tower was officially opened on May 19 by Mayor Klaus Nielsky with the words "Ik döp di op de Nom Schliekieker". With the opening, a “tower week” took place, organized by business people around the Schliekieker. At the end of the “tower week”, visitors were allowed to visit the operating room at a height of 71 m as part of an open day. The organizers of the Schleswig-Flensburg district group of the BUND donated the net proceeds of the tower week . The aim is to maintain the "Heavenly Eye" biotope.

With the commissioning, the private broadcaster Sat.1 could be received on channel 52 in Schleswig and the private broadcaster RTL plus on channel 54 . In addition to several directional radio links, transmitters for the C-Netz and D-Netz as well as systems for Cityruf were installed.

Also in 1993 a "Tower Week" was held at the "Schliekieker" under the motto Culture at the Tower . After the success of the Tower Weeks, the businesspeople from the north industrial area in Schleswig formed an advertising association. The " Tower Festival" in 1994 also took place under the motto Culture at the Tower and attracted 25,000 guests. The folk festival was no longer held in the following years.
