Guys (inclined ropes) of the Mainz-Kastel transmitter

A pardune is a guy rope for free-standing masts . Bracing with guys is always necessary if either the strength of the mast is insufficient to carry the wind loads that occur or a foundation of the mast itself is technically not possible at all (e.g. because the mast has to be insulated from the ground ).

Usually guys are stretched in three directions, which are offset from one another by 120 degrees when viewed from above. Depending on the mast height, guys often have to be installed at several heights in order to limit the mast from bending sideways in the wind. On the ground, the guys are usually anchored with solid concrete foundations .

To demolish a transmitter mast standing in an open area, the guys on one side of the mast are usually cut through with cutting charges , whereupon the mast tilts to the opposite side.

Isolation of guys

In the case of self-radiating transmission masts , the guys must not come into resonance with the transmission mast, in order not to adversely affect its radiation behavior. Usually, the Pardune is divided into sections with several isolators , which are shorter than a fifth of the emitted wavelength .

But it is also possible

  • to ground the guy on the guy foundations via a choke , which prevents electrical resonance,
  • to dimension their length appropriately so that direct earthing is possible, or
  • Use ropes made of non-conductive material.
