Localization of Hessen in Germany

The Mainz-Kastel transmitter is a broadcasting facility of the Südwestrundfunk for FM and DAB in the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kastel . The guyed transmission mast was built in 2013 and is 170 meters high. It replaced an older 156-meter-high transmitter mast from 1984.

location

Although the transmitter is located within the Hessian state borders, where the Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) is responsible for public broadcasting, it was built on behalf of Südwestfunk (SWF). The location in Mainz-Kastel was chosen in order to supply the entire city of Mainz with SWF programs, which otherwise would have been on the edge of the transmission area in a receiving hole.

Since the merger of SWF and SDR in 1998, the system has been operated by Südwestrundfunk (SWR) and is also owned by them. Until 2011, only SWR programs and also Deutschlandradio Kultur were broadcast. With the broadcast of DAB +, programs from hr and private broadcasters were added.

Renewal in 2013

From August 2013 the old 156 meter high mast in need of renovation was replaced by a newly erected 170 meter high steel lattice mast. In February 2014, the new transmitter had completely taken over operation and the dismantling of the old mast began. Since it was in a populated area, it had to be removed step by step up to a height of 70 meters, only then was the remaining tower stump moved with a heavy-duty crane. The dismantling work was largely completed on March 28, 2014.

FM frequency change 2017

On January 18, 2017 Deutschlandfunk and American Forces Network exchanged the FM frequencies, since then AFN Wiesbaden has been broadcast by the Wiesbaden Hainerberg station with 500 W and Dlf from the Großer Feldberg .
