Radio Darmstadt , as a free radio station, is a non-commercial local radio station that can be received in Darmstadt and the surrounding area.

The transmission frequencies are: FM 103.4 MHz (antenna). The broadcast studio is located at Steubenplatz 12 in Darmstadt . Radio Darmstadt also offers online listening as a podcast and audio stream .

history

In 1996, Radio Darmstadt was the first non-commercial local radio in Hesse to receive a broadcast license and on February 1, 1997, it went on permanent broadcast in Darmstadt . In contrast to many other community media, Radio Darmstadt has a fixed program schedule with periodically recurring programs. It sees itself as a "switch-on radio", i. h .: listeners switch on specifically to follow certain programs. The tasks of the radio also include imparting media skills.

In the course of the station's history there have been - in addition to regular broadcasting - numerous projects and special campaigns; including public events, live broadcasts (especially from the fields of politics and sport), special programs on various topics and cooperation with various partners.

In 1995 and 1996 a one-week radio event for the Darmstadt Heinerfest was broadcast, and in May 1996 an event radio for the national meeting of German gymnastics youth in Darmstadt.

Initially, the studio was housed in a former building of the municipal nursery on Bismarckstrasse, and a few months after the start of the broadcast there was a second studio on Hindenburgstrasse. Since February 1, 2000, broadcasts have been carried out exclusively from the broadcasting studio at Steubenplatz. After a technical renovation of the broadcast studios and the broadcast technology in summer 2008, Radio Darmstadt was able to significantly improve its sound quality. In the course of this technical renovation, all important audio lines were replaced with high-quality cables. In the early summer of 2010, the station began moving into smaller premises, which are, however, right next to the "old" broadcasting house. Since August 2010 it has been broadcast exclusively from here.

The Hessian State Authority for Private Broadcasting and New Media (LPR Hessen) extended the license by 4 years until December 31, 2012. On March 26, 2012, the meeting of the LPR Hessen decided not to extend the expiring license for the time being. One reason was the ongoing house bans against the station's own members. In December 2012, however, the state media authority granted a broadcasting license until December 31, 2017. The competitor Dissent eV received nothing. The renewed granting of the broadcast license to Radio Darmstadt was justified by the LPR Hessen with the "opportunities to participate in various social forces in the provider community and their influence on the program and the clearly recognizable journalistic addition in Darmstadt".

organization structure

The sponsoring association RadaR e. V. , which as of 2013 has around 550 members. 160 people work mostly on a voluntary basis on the project. The program is currently being designed by 11 editorial offices . Aurel Jahn, Raphael Beckers, Günter Eisbach, Markus Lang and Petra Schlesinger belong to the board of directors authorized to represent them.

financing

The station is largely financed by funds from the Hessian State Authority for Private Broadcasting and New Media (LPR Hessen). This state media authority uses part of the portion of the license fee that it receives to support non-commercial media projects. There are also association fees: Members pay 3 euros a month, students pay 1 euros, supporting members pay at least 5 euros a month.

As part of the Ludwig Metzger Prize 2011, Radio Darmstadt received a recognition award for its voluntary work. With this award, the Sparkasse Darmstadt annually honors non-profit associations, institutions and other organizations that show special commitment in their business area and are based in this sphere of activity.

Broadcast times

Radio Darmstadt broadcasts 24 hours a day. Live broadcasts run from 5 p.m. (Monday mostly from 4 p.m.) to 11 p.m. In the rest of the time, repetitions of the original program are sent. At the weekend there are more direct broadcasts both in the morning and in the night program.

Program (editorial offices)

When it is set up, an editorial office must consist of at least 5 natural persons; there is no upper limit, however. Care is taken to ensure that part of the program differs significantly from the mainstream offerings of commercial and public broadcasters. The individual programs are created by associations, groups or individuals. The makers are largely autonomous in terms of content and design. The programs can be roughly divided into music, information, entertainment and foreign language programs, as these examples show:

  • The international editorial team (until 2011 foreign editorial team ) offers a native speaker program. It consists of broadcasts in Polish, French, Russian, Italian, Sinhala, Spanish and Turkish. The weekly HamAwaas program in Farsi , Pashtu and German conveys a more nuanced picture of Afghanistan. Bigos, a popular magazine in Polish, is one of the veterans of Radio Darmstadt with its longstanding collaboration with the German Institute for Poland . Since May 1, 2011 there is also the weekly program Lanka Radio for listeners from Sri Lanka .
  • The editorial office Blickpunkt vor Ort (BVO) is a merger of the editorial offices Blickpunkt Gesellschaft and VorOrt that was created in May 2011 . Here a colorful association of all those interested in Darmstadt events and the region meets. a. also designed the Political Morning Magazine . After the tragic death of a very dedicated editor and the departure of another editor changed the remaining VorOrt -members in the political editorial viewpoint society . The local editorial office, Blickpunkt auf Ort , makes important contributions to the discussion on current issues such as environmental technologies and climate change, discrimination in everyday life and politics, both on a large and small scale.
  • The music department reports on music and its background and context. The aim of the music editorial team is to guarantee the greatest possible variety of music. By engaging with music, an alternative to the established radio stations is offered across all conceivable musical genres. This includes promoting the local music scene. Local bands and projects are offered a forum in which they can present themselves not only musically but also in terms of content. An exchange with the listeners also takes place through guest moderators and guest DJs. Studio guests such as Kurtis Blow , Jörn Elling Wuttke and Torsun Ego have already expressed respectfully about the expertise of the editors in the music department . The creators of the program headphones and bedroom disco accompany and develop programs in public broadcasting, among other things .
  • The AudioMax editorial team is designed by students and has life in and around the university in mind. In addition to interviews with the dean and guidance for students, a. reports on life for newcomers in Darmstadt. The aim of AudioMax is to make the radio medium available as a public forum for all student university groups, student councils, departments, the AStA and other university facilities and institutions as a mouthpiece.
  • The Mohnrot editorial team is designed by senior citizens and presents topics related to getting old and staying young . These include interviews and portraits of interesting senior citizens, cultural events in and around Darmstadt , history and sights of the city and the Darmstadt district, but also the energy transition, traffic transition , development of conversion areas, environmental initiatives and other political issues. For organizational reasons, the editorial team has now joined the culture department, the previous program continues unchanged.
  • The entertainment department presents topics of the most varied range in an accessible (magazine) format. From Michi's Schlagerbistro (Schlager and more) to Quite queer (sexuality), from LebensArbeit (portraits of Darmstadt personalities) to Film Radar (reviews and announcements of films), listeners are entertainingly informed and entertained.
  • The Young Power student editorial team is the editorial office for young people up to 25 years of age. Here, young people can test their skills in dealing with the media and learn media skills in practice. The editorial team is organized autonomously and is looked after by democratically legitimized adult members. Nevertheless, they subordinated themselves to the entertainment department. Well-known moderators who emerged from the editorial team are Benjamin May and Christian Max Franke. For organizational reasons, the editorial team has now joined the entertainment department.
  • The sports editorial team keeps the listeners up to date about sporting events in Darmstadt and reports on people from the world of sport. The sports editorial team not only concentrates on the common sports, but also tries to familiarize the audience with little-known disciplines or topics from the field of sports. In the broadcasts Radar Sportplatz and Radar-Frühsport , the editors also report on sports that are seldom represented in established media. In 2018, the sports editorial team shrank to such an extent that the remaining members dissolved the editorial team and joined BVO.
  • The KULTUR editorial team regularly reports on topical and current programs from all genres of art on more than 15 times a month from the attractive and dynamic cultural scene in and around Darmstadt. Programs like Augenweide , Der KultTour-Kalender and Voice of Architecture not only report on the formative cultural events in Darmstadt, the broadcasters often actively shape the events and are therefore extraordinarily close to the topic for a non-commercial local radio station.
  • The Offenes Haus editorial team enables contributions and slots for non-members. The broadcast slot can be allocated at short notice in order to organize a trial program on Radio Darmstadt. Every Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the guests determine the topic and design their broadcast.
  • The DJ-Zone editorial team presents DJs from the established electronic dance music scene. The guests are interviewed, play their tracks live and / or put on their sets. The DJ zone is part of the weekend night program. During this broadcast time, there are no repetitions such as B. weekdays. In the meantime (2018) its members have rejoined the entertainment editorial team from which they once hived off.
