The transmitter Weinbiet is a radio - backbone network transmitter of the SWR (SWR) at Neustadt on the wine route . The transmitter is located on the Weinbiet in the Palatinate Forest . Antenna support ( transmission tower ) is a 136 meter high guyed lattice mast .
The system is used to broadcast public and private radio programs in analog ( FM on ultra-short wave / band II ) and / or digital ( DAB + on band III ) technology. The broadcast of television programs in the (old) digital standard DVB-T was discontinued at the end of November 2018.
With the television station of the then Südwestfunk (SWF), which went into operation at the end of May 1953 , the Weinbiet station is one of the oldest stations in post-war German television history .
history
In the two years before the opening of the German television on Christmas Day 1952, had German Federal Post numerous radio set ( radio transmission sites ) for the exchange of programs between the studios and the modulation lines to the transmitters new build. For this purpose, the FREDA directional radio devices ( frequency- modulated decimeter wave system ) newly developed by Telefunken and Lorenz were used at selected locations . Due to its exposed location, the Weinbiet was the connection and junction between the FREDA systems on the Großer Feldberg in the Taunus and the Hornisgrinde in the northern Black Forest and the Merkur Tower near Baden-Baden . In addition, it was the location of a transmitter for VHF radio and the new medium of television, which was emerging again after the war .
Just in time for the first international direct broadcast in television history, the coronation of Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, a first 10 kW television station , working on channel 6 in VHF band III , was put into operation on the Weinbiet at the end of May 1953 also supplied the Stuttgart area until the commissioning of the Stuttgart television tower . In addition, Südwestfunk broadcast its radio program SWF1 on ultra-short waves from the Weinbiet .
