The Linz am Rhein transmitter was built in 1955 by Südwestrundfunk (formerly Südwestfunk ) for VHF and digital radio and DVB-T in Ginsterhahn ( St. Katharinen municipality ) near Linz on the Rhine . The transmitter is located on the northwest side of the 376 m high "Ginsterhahner Kopf" and is 156 meters high. The transmitter system consists of a guyed steel framework mast and a small free-standing steel tower.
Due to the exposed location in front of the beginning of the Cologne Bay , a few kilometers from the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia, and the high output of 50 kilowatts, the radio programs broadcast by the Linz transmitter reach several million people in the Cologne / Bonn region beyond Düsseldorf .

Until 1991 the program SWF2 was broadcast on the frequency 97.4 MHz . With the introduction of the fourth program (at that time SWF4 Rhineland-Palatinate ) the assignment was changed because the Südwestfunk lacked a fourth frequency at the Linz location.
Digital radio (DAB +)
The digital radio ( DAB + ) is broadcast in vertical polarization and in single-frequency mode with other transmitters.
The broadcast is directed, so that in NRW the range is by far not achieved as with FM.

Digital television (DVB-T)
Since September 30, 2009 the Linz broadcaster (as a filling station) has broadcast digital aerial television ( DVB-T ) with three public multiplex channels. The transmitter improved especially in the Ahr valley, in the area of Linz, Sinzig Bad Neuenahr the reception situation of the existing single-frequency network (Single Frequency Network) in the Rheinland-Pfalz Nord.
On November 8, 2017, the broadcast of DVB-T was switched off on the occasion of the switch to DVB-T2. Since then, the region has been supplied with DVB-T2 by the Koblenz transmitter.
