The telecommunications tower Habichtswald is a telecommunications tower (FMT) on the in High Habichtswald located Essigberg in North Hessian Kassel district and 186 m in height after the telecommunications tower Koblenz the second highest type tower Germany . It is a modified version of "FMT 3/72" and is not publicly accessible.
Geographical location
The Habichtswald telecommunications tower is located a little south-east of the highest point of the wooded Essigberg (approx. 597.5 m above sea level ), the northwest foothills of the Hohe Gras . It stands at a height of 594.2 m . It is about 700 m away from the western border of the Kassel urban area, so that it does not belong to Kassel, but to the municipality of Habichtswald , the closest district of which is Ehlen 2.8 km to the northwest.
History and description
The Habichtswald telecommunications tower, built from 1972 to 1975 (other information refers to 1973 to 1976), serves not only for directional radio and the non-public land radio service, but also for the distribution of VHF radio and TV programs. Its transmitter was put into operation on March 16, 1976.
Transmitter
The transmission system of the Habichtswald telecommunications tower broadcasts the VHF radio programs hr3 and hr4 -Nordost-Hessen (formerly Radio Kurhessen) via an antenna installed at a height of 146 m . At a height of 160 m, the tower carries another VHF transmitting antenna, via which the Hit Radio FFH program is broadcast.

Digital radio (DAB)
DAB is broadcast in vertical polarization and in single-frequency mode with other transmitters. The nationwide public broadcasting multiplex on DAB channel 7B and the nationwide multiplex on DAB channel 5C were activated on August 1, 2012.
Digital television (DVB-T2)
On November 8, 2017, the broadcast of DVB-T programs ended and regular operation of DVB-T2 HD began. In the DVB-T2 standard, the programs of ARD ( hr -Mux), ZDF and the commercial offer from freenet TV ( encoded in Irdeto ) are broadcast in HEVC video coding and in full HD resolution. The DVB-T2 HD -Ausstrahlungen from the transmitter Habichtswald are simulcast (Single Frequency Network) with other transmitter sites.

Cellular (LTE)
Telekom is the only mobile phone provider to have LTE antennas on the telecommunications tower, which supply the surrounding region. LTE band 20 (800 MHz) and LTE band 3 (1800 MHz) are installed. Frequencies of 900 MHz and 1500 MHz are also permitted for mobile communications there, but are not used as of 05/2020.
