The new studio is located in close proximity to Opernplatz at Opernstrasse 2 in downtown Kassel , as the FRK had to move out of the building due to plans to convert the Salzmann factory into a technical town hall.

history

The history of Freie Radios Kassel begins with the establishment of the Radio Initiative Kassel e. V. in June 1994. One year later, the first broadcasting operation was started as part of the Federal Congress of Free Radios, which took place in the Schlachthof cultural center in Kassel. However, the radio has only been on the air regularly since May 1, 1997 - the granting of licenses and the search for a suitable broadcast frequency took longer than originally planned. Since June 29, 2018, Freie Radio Kassel can also be received via DAB + .

As part of the move from the Salzmann factory to the Kassel city center in autumn / winter 2012, for the first time in the history of the FRK, “broadcasting operations were shut down” . H. only an emergency program could be broadcast from the computer.

organization structure

The Free Radio Kassel eV association is largely organized on a voluntary basis and offers those interested the opportunity to independently produce and broadcast radio reports. The FRK is a member of the Federal Association of Free Radios .

The station is largely financed by funds from the Hessian State Authority for Private Broadcasting and New Media (LPR Hessen). This state media authority uses part of the portion of the license fee that it receives to support non-commercial media projects. The association members also pay a minimum contribution of 25 euros per year.

Broadcast times

The Free Radio Kassel broadcasts 24 hours a day. Live broadcasts are eight to ten hours of new program every day from 4 p.m., which is repeated on the following morning from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The night program with themed programs runs between the daily program and 6 a.m. B. via indie, pop, alternative rock bands, and much more, sometimes live . The program “Maharishi Gandharva Ved” with classical Indian music will be broadcast from 6 am until it is repeated at 8 am.

In the course of the eventful history of the station there have been - in addition to regular broadcasting operations - numerous projects and special campaigns; including public events, live broadcasts, special programs on various topics and cooperation with various partners.

program

The Free Radio Kassel has, unlike many other citizen media through a fixed program schedule with recurring broadcasts. The FRK sees itself as a “ switch-on radio”, ie listeners switch on specifically in order to follow certain programs. The tasks of Free Radio also include imparting media skills . This is done through a variety of media educational projects, which are often carried out in cooperation with schools, universities, youth centers and other educational institutions.

Care is taken to ensure that the program differs significantly from the mainstream offerings of commercial and public broadcasters.
