The Schlachthof cultural center is an event location, advice center and cultural meeting point in Kassel. It is located on Mombachstrasse in the front part of the North Holland district , also known as Kassel Nordstadt. The cultural center is a member of LAKS Hessen and the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband . It is supported by the non-profit association of the same name.

The cultural center was created as a result of the relocation of the slaughterhouse to the Kassel district of Waldau, which became necessary in 1973 . The building complex of the old slaughterhouse was initially largely demolished, only the gatehouses remained. In 1978 the premises were occupied by a citizens' initiative that had called for a cultural and district center. The preservation of the building was enforced. Migrant groups started their work there, partly in cooperation with the German Trade Union Federation (DGB), and a local youth center was also installed. The voluntary, self-administered structures were put on a full-time basis from 1981 with the help of funding from the city of Kassel that continues to this day.

At around 33 percent, Nordstadt has by far the highest proportion of non-German residents in the population compared to other Kassel districts. In addition to concerts and other events for younger audiences, the association's main focus is on advising and educational offers for immigrants. The “promotion of dialogue and communication between people of different social and ethnic origins” is explicitly stated as one of the goals in the statutes of the sponsoring association.

At present, four groups of migrants and refugees from Spain, Italy, Iran and Eritrea have permanent club rooms in the cultural center. By renting numerous shops in the adjoining quarter, there is a wide range of support, integration and integration options. The cultural center is also the authorized sponsor of the European Social Fund program for job-related German promotion and is therefore a cooperation partner of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

Another focus of the cultural center's commitment is youth work. The municipal youth center continues, there are regular events for children and young people as well as individual projects. The general cultural program of the slaughterhouse includes around 220 events per year and ranges from concerts and disco evenings to comedy, readings, workshops, information and discussion events. The musical focus of the Schlachthof is on world music, jazz, hip-hop, punk and neo-folk. Last summer, the “Free and Outside Festival” took place in the neighboring Nordstadtpark for the first time . One of the most traditional events is the annual visit of the Compania Buffo , which makes a guest appearance in the adjacent tree garden and sets up its tents there.

In general, the slaughterhouse offers seven group rooms of different sizes (up to 60 people), a tea kitchen and two music practice rooms for groups and clubs. The affiliated pub is frequented by students from the neighboring vocational and technical college, Elisabeth-Knipping-Schule, during the school breaks.

The Schlachthof cultural center was an official location for the Kassel art event for the first time at documenta 12 in 2007 .
