from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kulturfabrik Salzmann eV is a registered, non-profit association in Kassel .

Today the empty administrative building of the historical industrial plant

Independently of the association, the building of the same name and industrial monument housed a large number of associations, artists, studios, clubs, practice rooms, recording studios, advertising agencies, a discotheque and the non-commercial local citizen broadcaster Freie Radio Kassel , which from today's perspective presumably related to the association and its specialty as well the size of the building as the driving force.

history

Cultural association

The association was founded in 1987 for documenta 8 by artists as a forum for art and culture. During documenta 9 in 1992, the action artist Flatz performed part of the performance “Demontage 1” in the Salzmann culture factory. First, short excerpts of arias from the Lakmé opera performed by two singers in the underground car park of the Museum Fridericianum were drowned out by two howling motorcycles until Flatz swung himself onto a motorcycle and hurried away with the hint that the performance would be continued in the factory . There the artist was waiting for his audience to slowly arrive to inform them that the performance was now over. In the supporting program of documenta 12 , the Salzmann culture factory was the location of the "Salon in Motion". In 2007 the Kassel cultural network initiated a debate about the future of work. Artists, doctors and scientists discussed key Documenta topics with the salon visitors.

The association was named after the textile factory founded in 1876 and the industrial monument Salzmann & Comp. , which is also often referred to as the Salzmann culture factory. The cultural operations in the Salzmann industrial monument in Kassel-Bettenhausen comprised three stages, an exhibition hall, several studios, a café and the bistro.

With its program, which included events from the genres of theater, dance, music, exhibitions and the promotion of young talent, the socio-cultural center was an important venue in the North Hesse region for local, regional art and culture.

Over a hundred visitors came to the listed brick building at Sandershäuser Strasse 34 for the 80-120 cultural events each year. From 1989 to 1992, Rolf Taher, Peter van Houy and Oliver Leuer developed the two-pronged disco concept Factory. With Frank and Bernd Kuchinke, two professional cultural workers in the catering and disco business were able to contribute to the continued existence of the company. The association rented out to the factory and to the studio users as sub-tenants in the west wing of the factory.

From 1992 to 1995 the Club Aufschwung Ost with Oliver Friedrich and his best friends and from 1996 to 2002 the Stammheim , an internationally known techno club , with Noah Marnie as the last person in charge, was based in the Kulturfabrik.

Documenta writer Peter Rühmkorf presented his "Fabrik" award in 1987. In 1994 the Kulturfabrik Salzmann received the cultural promotion prize of the city of Kassel. In 1996, Benedikt Müller exhibited his “Climate Pictures” in the Salzmann culture factory. In 1998 the Kulturfabrik Salzmann was awarded the Dr. Wolfgang Zippel Foundation honored for the Theater des Ostens . Further prizes and recognitions will follow, among others. a. for the International Dance Festival, the Free Flow Festival, the Trash Film Festival, the International Cultural Exchange, the Poetryslams and the Salzmann Rescue.

The association is currently working on the continuation of the cultural programs and the further sensible use of the Salzmann factory.

Use of the site since 2012

With the closure of the Salzmann & Comp. In 2012, the association's activities were relocated to the Panoptikum , a former copper hammer yard on Leipziger Strasse. The original cultural program can only be realized there to a limited extent. In the same year the demolition of the non-listed production halls began. In 2013, the Kassel Regional Council checked whether the owner Dennis Rossing was illegally storing construction waste on the site and issued an eviction order, which Rossing sued in autumn 2014. In the years that followed, several plans to further develop the area as a residential space and shopping center failed because the city, owners and investors could not agree on a common concept. Temporary use as refugee accommodation also failed. In January 2014, the Kassel FDP parliamentary group proposed that the building complex should be completely demolished; three months later, in April 2014, the museum was included in the Red List of Culture of the German Cultural Council and in category 2 ( endangered ) due to failed renovation and conversion plans . classified. In December 2015, the city of Rossing requested that the site be secured against decay in order to preserve the listed building parts, after BHB Bauwert Holding withdrew from the planned residential development in August 2015 and the project failed. On January 22nd, the city announced that it would secure the building and charge the costs to Rossing, who then announced legal action. In July 2016, the Kassel Administrative Court ruled that Rossing had to secure the building. Since Rossing did not meet his obligation, security measures were commissioned by the city. In 2017, owner Rossing announced that they would implement the residential project, but "away from luxury" and "towards affordable living space".
