The Stammheim was a techno club in Kassel known throughout Germany .

history

The Stammheim, up until 1996 Aufschwung Ost , was one of the most famous clubs in the 1990s , alongside the Berlin clubs Tresor and E-Werk , the Frankfurt establishments Dorian Gray and Omen and the Munich-based clubs ultrasound , KW - Das Heizkraftwerk and Natraj Temple Techno culture in Germany. The club achieved nationwide fame through advertising with the comic figure Ravelinde developed by the artist duo Bringmann & Kopetzki .

Origins and venue

The discotheque was founded on February 11, 1994 under the name Aufschwung Ost and was renamed in 1996. Until it was closed in 2002, it was located in the Salzmann culture factory in Kassel. The size was adjusted depending on the event and extended to up to three floors of the historic factory building (around 1660 square meters per floor).

The Stammheim was also known for its avant-garde decorations. These were designed by artists such as Stellmacher & Jensen and Jim Avignon .

Music and DJs

Party in the Stammheim

Many internationally known DJs and musicians performed in the Stammheim, including Paul van Dyk , Dr. Motte , Richie Hawtin , DJ Karotte , Carl Cox , Jeff Mills , Laurent Garnier , DJ Rush , Ricardo Villalobos , Armand van Helden , Anthony Rother , Westbam and Sven Väth . Other live acts included Kruder and Dorfmeister , Toktok and The Third Room . House and techno greats like Marshall Jefferson , Blake Baxter , Joey Beltram , Josh Wink , and Cristian Vogel also performed there regularly. The DJ and author Finn Johannsen (including de: bug, Groove) describes this as the concept of the Stammheim residents and compares the importance of the discotheque for Kassel with that of the documenta

Numerous radio broadcasts took place as part of the hr3 clubnight , and there were also organized major events (including in the run-up to the Berlin Love Parade and at festivals such as Nature One ).

The Stammheim has toured Germany several times (including Tresor / Berlin , Ultrasound / Munich , Dorian Gray / Frankfurt ). In 1998 the magazine Der Spiegel named the Stammheim in the same breath as these discotheques - a comparison that is also made again and again later. There were also events abroad (including in London, Sydney and Detroit).

End of the club

The club's lease was terminated in February 2002 due to complaints from neighbors about noise, piles of rubbish, parked cars from all over Germany and drug abuse around the site (1.5 km in the vicinity). Since the closure, only occasional events have taken place at various venues under the name of Stammheim.

Comic advertising and reception

The club's comic advertising was carried out by the comic artists Bringmann & Kopetzki , and received a great deal of attention throughout Germany through their well-known comic series Hotze in the music magazine Groove .

The Stammheim was loved by the readers of various music magazines, e. B. the magazines Frontpage and Groove , voted several times as the best club in Germany and has twice been awarded the Dance Music Award .

In 2009 the documentary Zeitgeist Stammheim was released in German cinemas.
