Ronald Hitzler

Ronald Hitzler (born March 4, 1950 in Königsbronn in Baden-Württemberg ) is a German sociologist .

Life

In 1970 Ronald Hitzler passed the subject-related higher education entrance qualification at the Heidenheim Business School . Between 1970 and 1974 he completed a 20-month editorial traineeship at the Schwarzwälder Bote , a regional daily newspaper. From October 1972 to January 1974 he did community service in a nursing home in Heidenheim.

Hitzler studied sociology , political science and philosophy at the University of Konstanz from 1974 to 1978 and graduated with a Magister Artium in sociology and political science. Thomas Luckmann and Volker Roth were reviewers for the master’s thesis .

In June 1987, a doctorate Hitzler at Peter Gross and Ulrich Beck for Dr. rer. pole. at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Bamberg .

In April 1995, he completed his habilitation in sociology at the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences at the Free University of Berlin . Friedhelm Neidhardt , Ulrich Beck, Hans-Georg Soeffner and Dietmar Kamper were the reviewers of the habilitation thesis.

Teaching

From 1979 to 1982 Hitzler worked as a research assistant at the chair 'Culture, Communication and Methodology' at Luckmann at the University of Konstanz. This was followed by activities as a research assistant at the University of Bamberg (1982 to 1984) and at the Research Institute for Sociology at the University of Cologne (1985 to 1989). In addition, he worked as a freelance journalist from 1983 to 1984 . From 1989 to 1995 Hitzler was Ulrich Beck's research assistant, initially for three years at the University of Bamberg, then from 1992 at the University of Munich .

After various professorships at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Munich between 1995 and 1997, Hitzler held the Chair for General Sociology from April 1997 to 2017 and since his retirement he has headed the research area Modernization as an Action Problem at the Technical University of Dortmund .

  • From 2005 to 2006 and from 2009 to 2013 he was a member of the DGS board.
  • From 1995 to 2001 chairman of the 'Political Sociology' section.
  • From 2005 to 2010 chairman of the 'Sociology of Knowledge' section.
  • From 2008 to 2015 member of the 'Social Sciences' review board of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Other scientific activities

Hitzler is a scientific advisor to various social science journals and editor of several book series for the publishers Springer VS and Beltz Juventa. He is co-organizer of the Fulda field work days, reviewer at various institutions and member of various commissions and juries.
