The 170 meter high DVB-T transmission tower in Leipzig is a chimney . The tower belonged to 1996 to the decommissioned at this time heating plant south of Leipzig Stadtwerke . From July to September 2005 it was converted into an antenna carrier and on October 1st a heavy lift helicopter put a 20 meter high antenna mast on top. In contrast to other antenna-bearing chimneys, the conversion prevents it from being used as a chimney. In Leipzig and the surrounding area, the omnidirectional antenna was able to supply around two million potential users with digital antenna television. The DAB + multiplex digital radio Germany and the multiplex Sachsen 9A (each with 10 kW) were broadcast from the DVB-T broadcast tower in Leipzig .
A cellular phone system is installed on the lower stage of the chimney.
After the current leaseholder, Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, put the new radio tower into operation in the immediate vicinity , the antenna mast was dismantled by helicopter on June 29, 2016.
