The telecommunications tower Wuppertal-Küllenhahn (also called communications tower Rigi-Kulm is known) one of the oldest telecommunications towers of reinforced concrete in Germany. The tower stands on the southern heights of Wuppertal in the Küllenhahn district at 330 meters above sea level . It is operated by Deutsche Funkturm GmbH .
The construction
The telecommunications tower Wuppertal-Küllenhahn is an eleven-storey reinforced concrete tower ( type tower ) built in 1956 by the Deutsche Bundespost with a total height of 98.5 meters. The lowest of its four antenna platforms is at a height of 41 meters, the uppermost at a height of 67 meters. He replaced a 35 meter high temporary lattice mast tower in the same place.
The first test drillings to investigate the subsurface were carried out in January 1956, construction began in April 1956. It was primarily used for the FREDA radio equipment ( frequency- modulated decimeter wave system ) on the television transmission line Hamburg-Cologne of the two broadcasters NDR and WDR (until 1955/56 NWDR ) built. He also expanded the telephone -Richtfunknetz to 60 additional voice circuits and was station in the car phone - A network of public land mobile radio service (OBL) of the Federal Post Office.
The Wuppertal-Küllenhahn telecommunications tower is used to distribute television programs (until the switch to DVB-T , ZDF was broadcast on channel 22 with 100 kW ERP and WDR television on channel 42 with 85 kW ERP), directional radio , mobile radio (D1- Station CIs F23C / F23D / F23F (hex) or 62012/62013/62015 (dec)) and as an amateur radio relay (FM amateur radio relay DB0CA in 70 cm ). The main direction of the radiation is to the south and reaches all of Wuppertal with its demanding topography in the valley.
Up until the end of the 20th century, there was a guyed steel truss mast next to the tower .
Rigi-Kulm
The name Rigi-Kulm goes back to a formerly popular restaurant that had been in the family since 1910. The restaurant was built where there was a good view of the Wupper valley . The name goes back to the founder of the family company, Wilhelm Gietenbruch. In 1913 he sent his daughter Helene to Switzerland on Lake Lucerne , where she was supposed to learn how to run a hotel. From her stay, the young woman also brought the future name of the restaurant with her: Rigi-Kulm , a panoramic mountain known for its panorama. The restaurant was closed on September 29, 2013 and the building was demolished in 2015.
