The transmitter Nordhelle near Herscheid ( Märkischer Kreis , North Rhine-Westphalia ) on the Nordhelle in the Ebbegebirge is a broadcasting system of the West German Broadcasting Corporation (WDR) for radio and television .

Geographical location

The transmitter Nordhelle is located on the summit area of ​​the Nordhelle , the 662.7  m above sea level. NHN highest mountain of the Ebbegebirge; at the foot of its telecommunications tower is the Herscheider Hütte restaurant . In addition, there is a telecommunications tower made of reinforced concrete used by the Bundeswehr for mobile communications in the summit area .

A WDR transmission system had existed on the Nordhelle since 1962. A reinforced concrete telecommunications tower, which was erected in 1984 and is 150 m high, is currently used as the antenna carrier. It is used to broadcast radio programs from WDR and Deutschlandfunk on FM and in the DAB standard. In addition, 15 public television programs are broadcast in the DVB-T2 standard.

Due to its exposed location, the transmitter location has an above-average range for VHF and can be received not only in the Sauerland, but also in large parts of the Rhineland and Ruhr area. In addition, the location enables the reception of WDR programs in some areas of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. Depending on the receiving location, the transmitter can be received between Münster and Wiesbaden, Aachen and Marburg.

Digital radio ( DAB / DAB + )

DAB or the successor standard DAB + is broadcast in vertical polarization and in single-frequency mode with other transmitters. On August 29, 2012 the change from DAB channel 12D to DAB channel 11D took place. The multiplex radio for NRW with the programs of the WDR and the Domradio with an output of 10 kW (originally 1.5 kW until May 2019) ERP is currently being transmitted via this ; until 2015 Radio Impala was also broadcast.

Digital television ( DVB-T / DVB-T2 )

In South Westphalia , the switch to the DVB-T2 standard with HEVC picture coding took place on December 5, 2018. Optionally, additional programs included in the WDR offer and Freenet TV connect as a link can be played via an internet connection, if the receiving device HbbTV (from version 1.5) (WDR via IP: ARD-alpha HD , BR FS Süd HD , hr-fernsehen HD , rbb Berlin HD and SR Fernsehen HD ). Freenet TV's paid private programming is broadcast terrestrially from the Dortmund (Florianturm) and Bielefeld (Hünenburg) locations .
