Radio Impala was a private radio broadcaster based in Berlin . It took over large parts of its programming from the Russian government's foreign service, Voice of Russia , which produced individual programs exclusively for the station.

history

Founding history of the station

In May 2012, the company Pleximedia was founded in Berlin-Charlottenburg and started operating a private broadcasting company. However, it only went on air on September 3, 2012 under the name Radio D1 in Berlin with a "rump program" with pop songs and jingles, which was later to be expanded into an information channel. The plan was to put more metropolitan area stations into operation in the regions of Frankfurt, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia under the joint umbrella brand TopDABRadio in the same year . In September the program was broadcast with the station identification “Radio Lux”. RTL communications chief Michael Duderstädt then stated that the similarity of the names was purely coincidental, RTL had nothing to do with the company and the broadcaster had been asked to change the name because of the risk of confusion. A telecommunications company was bothered by the name D1; the program was temporarily broadcast with the identifiers “iX” and “iXar”, which reminded Dehnmedia of a computer magazine. On October 2nd, the final name Radio Impala was used.

In September 2012, Pleximedia received the approval to distribute the Russian-German language program in Hesse, which had already been approved nationwide. The sole shareholder at this time was Vartan Toganyan, owner and managing director of the Eurasian Media Group based in Moscow (later 100% of the shares of Pleximedia were transferred to a company called New Century United Enterprise GmbH based in Potsdam). Broadcasting began in Hesse in early December. In the tender for the DAB multiplex in North Rhine-Westphalia, Pleximedia named TopDABRadio as a working title in June 2012 , before Impala was approved for participation in the DAB plus pilot project in November 2012.

In January 2013 it became known that the Russian government's foreign broadcaster, Voice of Russia , was planning a new radio program called Radio Moscow, which would be broadcast in Germany via DAB +. On the Facebook page, the broadcaster announced that the program should be “fresher and more dynamic” than the German-speaking foreign service of the Voice of Russia and more young people should be able to provide information about Russia. The official start of the program was announced for April 1, 2013. Until then, Radio Impala took over its program for 18 hours a day. The program, which is divided into four-hour blocks, was only designed by Pleximedia in the fourth hour. The station wants to "start its correct program from April 1st". In April, the program was activated in North Rhine-Westphalia, according to Managing Director Kats, the structure of the program was largely completed by this time. The takeover of broadcasts of the Voice of Russia, such as news, was retained thereafter.

program

At the beginning, the program offered musical classics from 60 years of rock and pop history. In the opinion of the managing director Kats one concentrated "on titles that have been a little forgotten on other waves". With the focus on young artists with current titles, they want to enrich the radio diversity in Germany according to information on the station homepage. In terms of content, the program was a. to decision-makers and investors in Germany.

The program was accompanied by lounge music, as it was called on the station's own website. In addition, artists from the “Lofi Lounge” concerts in the nightclub chocolates and “Solaris Empire” artists were presented in the monthly program “Solaris Empire Lounge” . The music style ranged from indie pop / rock to the introduction of singer-songwriters. In addition, new performers were promoted in the form of musical interviews in “Susann's Show”. B. Sam Wareing with her project “Wasp Summer” and Marie Leão from Wonderska (Ska). The better-known musicians included B. the Finnish musician Islaja or the Japanese guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto.

The joint program of the Voice of Russia and Radio Impala included the news magazine Berlin Live, moderated by Anastasia Gorokhova, Alexander Sorkin and Armin Siebert ( Radio Fritz ). It was produced by the Voice of Russia in Berlin and also discontinued after Impala ceased broadcasting. In the evening program, current topics were discussed with media representatives, politicians, cultural workers and experts three times a week. Radio Impala was not the official program partner of Voice of Russia.

Distribution and end of broadcasting

The program started in Berlin ( TV tower , DAB block 7B under the name Radio D1 ) and then in the Rhine-Main region ( Großer Feldberg / Frankfurt Europaturm , DAB block 11C) and in the state-wide multiplex in North Rhine-Westphalia, 11D each at 72 kb / s in DAB + mode. The program was also available on the station's homepage at 128 kB / s. The station identification there is "Radio Impala P2B Media Net01".

On November 10, 2014, it was announced that the Russian international broadcaster would be renamed and restructured to Radio Sputnik . The day after, broadcasting began under this name. When the contract with the voice of Russia expired, Radio Impala ceased broadcasting in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse at the end of December 2014. Until the end of the notice period for the DAB stations in Berlin, instrumental music was played there and in the live stream for a month longer. After that, the organizer Pleximedia was also practically settled at the Berlin location and expired on September 3, 2015 after the merger with Costa GmbH ( Potsdam ).
