The Siegen-Giersberg transmission system , also called Siegen transmitter , is a transmission system for VHF and television (until 1993 also for medium wave) of the West German Broadcasting Corporation on the 358 meter high Giersberg in Siegen , which went into operation in 1950. The VHF transmitters have a relatively low transmission power and thus only serve as a filler transmitter for the city of Siegen.
Antenna support
Since 2001, a 103 meter high (without DVB-T antenna) grounded, guyed steel truss mast has been used as the antenna carrier , which is guyed in two levels at 37 and 79 meters. The mast has a square cross-section with a side length of 1.40 meters.
At the end of December 2001, the new mast, which cost around eight million euros, replaced the old transmission mast, which was ten meters shorter and, in contrast to this, was insulated from the earth, as it also served as the transmission antenna for the medium-wave transmitter. It had been on the Giersberg since 1950, but was no longer able to cope with the antenna load.
In August 2007, a DVB-T transmission antenna was installed on the head of the mast. After broadcasting the first program in the VHF-III band, digital television DVB-T was started on November 13 of the same year . Since then, vertical radiation has been used to facilitate mobile reception in Siegen.

The VHF program WDR 5 is broadcast by the WDR transmitter on the Kindelsberg in the north and by the Ederkopf transmitter in the east . The transmitter Deutschlandfunk Kultur is broadcast on a VHF filling frequency from a small transmission tower on the Fischbacherberg for the city area.
Digital radio (DAB +)
The NRW package of the DAB radio is also broadcast from the transmission tower . On August 29, 2012 the change from DAB channel 12D to DAB channel 11D took place. The Multiplex Radio for NRW with the programs of the WDR and the Domradio with an output of 1 kW (beginning until July 9, 2019 only 0.36 kW) ERP is transmitted vertically. This package is also broadcast by the neighboring Ederkopf transmitter at Netphen with 1.5 kW. After the Eisernhardt telecommunications tower was originally shut down in 2010, it has been on the air again since December 14, 2015 with a transmission power of 10 kW on channel 5C. From there, the so-called Bundesmux is distributed with stations from Deutschlandradio as well as sunshine live , Schlagerparadies , Energy , Klassik Radio and others. This ensures nationwide reception of a total of 28 digital radio programs in the city of Siegen. The surrounding areas are only partially supplied. The SWR channel from neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate with 13 additional programs is not yet possible across the board in Siegen. This will only change in 2021 with the connection of a transmitter in Mudersbach, which is about 11 km as the crow flies from Giersberg with a clear view of Siegen.

Digital television (DVB-T2 HD)
On December 5, 2018, the 3 transmission systems in South Westphalia (Nordhelle, Siegen and Hochsauerland) were converted to DVB-T2 . 15 public television programs can be received in full HD quality (1080p). The Freenet TV payment platform is not distributed via the Siegen city broadcaster, as is usual elsewhere.

Digital television (DVB-T)
The DVB-T broadcasts on the transmitter Siegen-Giersberg ran from 13 November 2007 to 5 December 2018 and were in single-frequency operation (Single Frequency Network) with the transmitter sites WDR radio tower Nordhelle and the telecommunications tower Bödefeld common. The high channel 60 had a greater attenuation and was not suitable for long-distance reception despite the double transmission power.

Medium wave
From 1950 to 1993 the medium wave frequency 702 kHz (before the Geneva Wave Plan 1978 came into force 701 kHz) was broadcast.
Cellular
The mast is also used by the mobile phone companies for their transmission systems (mobile and directional radio). A two-sector LTE transmitter in the 2600 MHz frequency spectrum was last installed and put into operation by Vodafone in September 2015; the same system also covers the 800 MHz LTE band and UMTS. The sectors are aligned at 40 ° and 120 ° and supply the neighboring districts with fast internet and telephony.
Neighbor transmitter
The reception quality in this region is very different due to the low mountain range of the Siegerland. In most of the Siegen city area, reception can be carried out using a rod antenna or an indoor antenna. Outside of this, a roof antenna is required, with which additional locations can sometimes be received. In some cases, it is only possible to receive local stations, and sometimes digital satellite reception (DVB-S) is required.
In favorable locations in the Siegerland and Sauerland, it is possible to receive private programs (Freenet TV) from neighboring regions.
The local time Südwestfalen of the WDR is only broadcast by the three transmitters Nordhelle, Siegen and Hochsauerland as well as by the transmitters of the DVB-T2 area Bielefeld. From locations outside of North Rhine-Westphalia, only the local time Cologne is broadcast.
address
The property with the transmitter mast is on the street Am Sender, a side street off Giersbergstrasse .
